Hello,

Situation: My PC is sitting on my desk on the 2nd floor and it's connected to a Wireless-N-repeater (via a lan cable), which is connected to the router via wifi. If I download something (Civ 5 from steam for example) it gives me about 4 MB/s but sometimes it drops to 0 for a while. I also have lag spikes when im playing online games (rocket league, lol, csgo).

To find out what the problem might be, I tested the following combinations:
Laptop connected directly to router: downloadspeed = 35+ MB/s
Laptop connected to wifi upstairs = 8 MB/s
Laptop connected to repeater upstairs via lan cable = 4 MB/s

PC connected directly to router = 15 MB/s but sometimes drops to 0 for a while.
PC connected to repeater upstairs via lan cable (begin situation) = 3 MB/s

I know the lan cable isnt the problem.

Question: what is the problem and how could I try and solve it?

Specs of PC:
ASRock 970 extreme 3
AMD fx 6300
Seagate SSHD 1 TB
8 GB RAM
Win 10
My PC is about 5 years old now.

Specs of laptop: Lenovo IdeaPad 510-15ISK 80SR00FCMH:
Intel i5 6200U
8 GB RAM
Win 10
About 1,5 years old.

I hope you guys know more than I do and I hope you can ignore my grammar mistakes :)

Wireless is very poor for high bandwidth (streaming or large downloads) or latency sensitive (gaming) applications.

Extenders are a poor substitute for an access point and cut your bandwidth by half but still have the vagaries of wireless. An AP (usually a cheap router configured as an AP) needs to be connected to the router via cable or a pair of PL adapters. Although even next to the AP your wireless can have latency spikes from the many other sources of radio interference.

The best solution if you cannot run an Ethernet cable to your machine from the router (or to an AP next to the router with your computer plugged into an LAN port to give you wireless for phones or other stuff), is to use AV2-1000/1200 powerline adapters in place of the cable.

HERE is a good source for how various PL models work.

Ty very much for your quick answer, Ill definitely look into it.

I cant connect my pc directly to the router. My wireless n repeater does have an ap mode, but I cant get that close to the router while connected to my pc either :(.

Also, my laptop gets better results via wifi if im in the same room as my pc, i think that is caused by some of my pc components getting old.

I think i need to upgrade/update a part of my pc as well as try to get a better connection to the router.

We did fix the problem. We made a couple holes in the walls and now im connected directly to the router downstairs. I used my downloadspeed on steam as a measurement tool. Before, I had about 2-4 MB/s, now I reach 40!
Although we didnt use your solutions, since we did something I said we wouldnt, I want to thank you for taking the time to help me out :).
