Cloning hdd D: to external drive, swapping with SSD, then cloning it back from external

I just cloned my D: hdd to an external drive, then swapped it with an SSD in the D: physical slot, and I then clone the external drive to the newly installed SSD. I hope there will be no difference, and D: will work as usual, after this?

Done properly, it should work.
Was this a secondary drive, or the OS drive?
Desktop or laptop?

Thanks, it was not the OS drive, but it still had some installs on it. It's a laptop. I don't know what properly would mean, but I used Aomei backupper, and it looked exactly the same when I checked the external drive afterwards.

I guess I just don't know some basic computer here, and I'd love to understand the relation between files, drives and OS, in a dumbed down way? :)

If the new drive ends up with the same drive letter as the original drive, it should work just fine.
I'm heading out to work right now, but can give a good description of how all those things interact later.

Unfortunately it got the wrong letter (F: ). Testing applications installed on the previous D: disk does not work. Is there a way to change the letter back, without messing with the paths?

Yes, you can change the drive letter in Disk Management.
Right click, and "Change Drive Letter or path..."

Thanks, this all worked out beautifully! After simply changing F: to D:, the cloning with Aomei worked really well.
Man, laptop scared me starting up abruptly with no sound what so ever - no spinning disk, only glorious SSDs!

CAUTION:
That only works with secondary drives.
You CANNOT do that with the OS drive. Tears will result.
