My 7700K is running too hot and I don't know why.

I recently bought a 7700k to my existing z170 setup, and it worked, but I realised that I couldn't overclock it due to ASUS blocking it or whatever, this kinda forced me to run standardized settings, I even tried to downgrade my BIOS to a version that "should" work, but that proved impossible.

I run idle with 52~ degrees (celsius) and when stresstesting it reached 100 and made my system impossible to use, (slowing down my cursor etc.)

After repasting my CPU and applying my water cooling onto it again it didn't lower anything, and even experimenting with voltages doesn't help. Should I try and remove my CMOS and just use the factory settings, what should I do in this situation? I might aswell use my 6600K and send the 7700K back as I can get a stable temp clocking it to 4.5(6600K).

If anyone could help me, and I'd gladly answer any questions you might have.

Solution
Something is wrong. Not sure what it is though. Even if it winds up being something else, the Kraken X62 performs much better.

Let us know if you figure it out.

I have the cooler master seidon and use the z170 Pro Gaming from ASUS, I can link you this thread that shows what I'm experiencing and it shows at the end that BIOS version 3007 is the one that works and I have a newer version installed, I can't seem to flash it through a USB drive (recently formatted to FAT32.)

How do I test if the pump works?

Also what would you call a stable vcore for 7700 non overclocked?

EDIT:
I'm gonna try and leave my CMOS out for 20 minutes plus, lets hope it fixes the issues with overclocking, I might accidentally have switched around in the settings due to clicking "set optimized defaults", which changed the vcore among other stuff to weird numbers. If not I can always try to reflash with another USB, about the cooler I don't really know what to do to check if it is working, my 6600K was cool even at 100% loads maxing 78'ish on Prime95

My 7700K would run at 1.225V stock easily. It helped with temps some. With a liquid cooler it should be able to do better than that, around 1.20V.

I don't have any experience with liquid cooling but from what I've read you should be able to hear the pump working, and also you can feel of the tubes and the radiator to see if the warm liquid is circulating.

Also, start by ensuring it is properly plugged in to your motherboard.

*And do you have the 120mm or 240mm cooler?

That temp is too high for idle. Idle temp for the 7700K should be less than 35C. As other said, I would check and see if the water cooler is working. Try to hear if the pump is working by putting your ear close to the pump

So I am starting to think it doesn't work, further stress testing ends with 100 degrees celcius at 100% load, I use Arctic MX4 paste so it shouldnt be a problem and I repasted a couple times already. The pump is definitely turned on as it has a blue LED indicating it has power.

Not sure how it stopped or anything, wires are connected properly and such. Might have to invest in a more expensive water cooling unit

I have a 120mm one, I don't feel much heat coming from the radiator, but that being said, I run 40-50 degrees at idle so I wouldn't really be able to feel it. I can't seem to run 70 or alike as it will jump to 100 during stresstesting, I don't really wanna let it sit in 100 degrees for too long as it would damage it. I also use the correct stress vers for prime95, so it should be good..

I just wanna bump this thread, I might have made a mistake now, but I ordered a new water cooler (kraken x62) and will see the results otherwise I will just RMA the cpu back to the seller or intel. It's either my watercooler or CPU that is messing with my temperatures.

I will, also as mentioned before, I haven't overclocked it yet as I wanted to try stress it before and test thermals, I would still be able to RMA it back? Should I contact intel or the ones I bought it at?

I would like to thank you volkgren and gasaraki for participating in helping me solve this issue, I got the x62 installed and now run 29 degrees IDLE. If anyone have a Seidon you might have the same issue as me, and upgrading solved this easily for me. I am just about to stress it and get results there, I doubt they are to any use for people who have temperature issues.

It was an expensive solution but needed, now everything is cool and solved, thanks again!
