My desktop is wired into my modem and the Ethernet Status in windows shows the speed at 1.0Gbps.

My download speed has always been around 35-50Mbps. I always figured that was just my ISP.

I noticed my laptop was getting 110+Mbps download speed over wifi, so today I decided to test a USB wifi adapter on my desktop and the speed in windows shows 135Mbps, but my download speed is 150Mbps.

I am a video editor and when working from home I choose to work on my laptop instead of really powerful PC simply because I can download and upload media 5x faster.

But the Wifi signal is not consistent so when i play games online, my ping fluctuates dramatically over wifi vs a constant but slower wired.

Any ideas if there is something to fix here?

The cable I believe is Cat-6e, I have it running along the walls and under the carpet, I have the cable flush with all the edges of the walls, like bend around the corners, could this be the issue?

Thats what I felt ignorant about.

I am paying for 100+ Mbps with Spectrum and using googles internet speed test.

I just tested downloading a short video that was 2.7gb. It completed in 2 minutes on wireless and 13 minutes wired.

The wireless download though would get to about 90-95% and fail on three different attempts though, but I feel like that's a separate signal interference issue.

It was from the router (15ft straight distance) to my computer along the walls, so the cable itself probably ran about 20ft. There is a doorway in the wall between the router and my computer so instead of going up and over the door frame, I put it under the carpet.

I'm marking this as resolved because I believe the cord was the issue. I've since moved to a new place and got a new cord (1ft) as the router is right next to the PC now. Ran the same tests as before and my wired connection now gives faster test results than the wifi. I was pretty happy to not have to redo the entire cable under the carpet thing...
