Hello Tom's Hardware Members!

I have a question that I have yet to find an answer to.

I have an ADATA SU650 ~120GB SATA SSD that I have been connecting to my Windows 10 laptop via SATA-to-USB3 adapters for some time to use, and recently I went to "Optimize" it, and realized that Windows 10 recognized it as an HDD instead of an SSD. I have tried winsat with many different parameters, and nothing works (I suspect now it only works for internal SSDs). I have also tried with 3 different adapters, two of which are enclosures, and still nadda.

So, my question is this: Does anyone know how to get Windows 10 to recognize it as the drive it is? Thanks!

Solution
As far as I know, TRIM is the part of SATA protocol. Windows is not using SATA commands when communicating with external USB drive.
In theory, if you connect the SSD to the internal connector, Windows will "trim": it.

What windows sees, is the SATA to USB adapter.

That makes sense. For all of the SATA-to-USB3 adapters I have used, Windows states that the external drives being connected are done so via a SCSI connection.

As an extension of my original question, though, is there any way to get Windows 10 to treat the external drive with TRIM commands when "optimizing" it, even if Windows refuses to "see" the drive "itself"?
