so im upgrading my motherboard and i cant find anything that actually helps me know how to change/upgrade my motherboard, rn i have an x58 chipset, i7 950, and im upgrading to an i5 4690k and an asus rog vii ranger, i want to know what i have to do, ive already activated windows with my account, does that mean i can just pull my motherboard out and switch em, or do i need to go through and delete the drivers, if so, how do i know which drivers to delete?

honestly, not a single video is showing me what to do properly, they all just take the motherboards out which i already know how to do

Solution
correct but you will need to backup any important data first because you will loose all your data doing this if not. you would go into windows 10 settings and when doing the factory reset pick the option to not keep your files. that option will do a clean install of windows

i dont have windows 10 on a usb or disk, i only have it activated, do i really need to completely reset my pc to do it?

when you change a motherboard a lot of hardware gets changed so in order for the computer to run properly with a newer mobo you need to do a clean install of windows. if you were able to successfully activate windows on the new motherboard you will not have to activate again after the clean install

thank you guys so much, all the videos and guides ive seen have been saying to go into device manager etc. and delete all my old motherboard drivers and cpu drivers and graphics card drivers and i just thought that it seemed too sketchy because heaps of people were saying different things

Really no way around it. You need to do a fresh install since you switch motherboards. Otherwise it's gonna cause none-stop headaches forever. Plus your windows licenses is for the motherboard, and you can't switch that out without needing to buy a new copy.

depends on the liscence type. if this was an OEM copy of windows 10 that is not from a brand name computer you can use the activation troubleshooter to move it over

welp. thanks for your help everyone, im hoping that everything goes well and works, when i put the new cpu and motherboard in tomorrow, i boot it up, its gonna show me windows 10, im gonna activate it through there and there will be a smile on my screen :)

When you do a clean install, you will get a new and empty registry.
All apps that used the registry will need to be reinstalled.
If your games are steam games, there is a procedure to move them to a different hard drive.

You can download an ISO image of windows to do the clean install.
Make certain you have your original activation key which you may be able to reuse.

Because your new chipset is different, you likely will not be able to boot your current windows image.
If you can, great, just install your drivers from your new motherboard cd. No need to delete old drivers.

If you can't boot, you will need to do a new clean install, wiping your install drive first.
This would be a good time to install new on a ssd.
That way, you have all your old stuff off line enabling you to recover from any problems.

There is a free app called magical jelly bean keyfinder that finds keys

well, i now have the key to my windows 10 pro, now what :p

hmm so either he forgot to give you the key or he left it unactivated. there is also the possibility if he did activate it he used some kind of crack to do so. jellybean keyfinder will be able to find the key for you though

all done, windows 10 pro with the cd key, just dont know what to do now

if you have all your data backed up then you can go into windows 10 settings and perform reset the PC and use the "remove everything" option to do a clean install. using this way you may not need to reenter the CD key but copy or save it somewhere just in case

alright, correct me if im wrong but right now i need to, perform clean install. take out motherboard, put new motherboard in/plug everything in. then use activation key if it prompts me to. if not go into activation and troubleshoot to give me windows after windows boots and just start like normal. or do i have to go onto windows and now get windows 10 on a usb
