Fan voltage confusion

My ASUS Z97 Mobo has 4-pin fan connectors that are identified as :gnd., fan power, fan in, and +5v. Does this mean I am limited to 5v. fans? What does the "fan power" pin do ?

"fan power" (together with gnd) is 12VDc. +5v must be PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) component that regulates frequency and length of signal to fan to regulate it's RPM. "Fan in" is signal from fan's tachometer to show it's actual RPM.
