Edit: my photos aren’t showing for me, hope they are for everyone else... someone please tell me if they aren’t.

My pc shut off suddenly on me the other evening and I’ve begun to take it apart. I had a motherboard failure recently(diagnosed at micro center) and because the system has the same symptoms I’m guessing it’s MoBo failure again. I’m waiting on a power supply tester to be delivered today.

I can build a pc no problem but I’m not an electronics or hardware expert by any means. I decided to take all of the shields off and check the components though against photos of failed motherboards. While I didn’t see any obvious bad capacitors, I did notice what seemed to be different coloring and an odd loop pattern near the components just above the processor socket. It may just be where the thermal pad was touching the board though. Any insight is appreciated.

The board is an MSI Z270 M5

Sudden shutoff of an otherwise fine system is most commonly a power supply failure, particularly if it won't turn on any more after that. Typically when a motherboard fails nowadays, it's from bad power capacitors. I don't see anything unusual in the tiny portion of the motherboard you photographed.

Other causes of spontaneous shutdown are a short somewhere (possible if computer is open or you're messing with things while it's running), overheating with thermal shutdown (which would resolve after the computer sits and cools down).

Another weird one is anomalies in the electrical supply causing a shutdown of the power supply, which can be reset by unplugging it from the wall for 10-15 seconds, then reconnecting it to power.
