I have been on Micro Center, Newegg and Amazon. Micro Center is sold out of anything over an RX560 and tben are asking outrageous prices for 710's and 5 year old Quattro cards. Newegg wants 1,000 bucks for a GTX 1070 ! Amazon is a nightmare what the hell is going on !?

Solution
I bought a 1080ti just a few months ago for $760 and the same model is now at like $1400... it's ridiculous, but luckily Bitcoin and Ethereum are crashing hard so prices should go down soon...

Cryptocurrency mining. Ethereum. They use gfx cards for their mining. It was like that last year too, but tapered off for awhile. Now it is hot again and worse than before. Seems like these folks doing the mining already have a ton of money if they can buy several cards at a time and gang them up. It would seem to someone as dumb as me that they have eaten into any profit right off the start with the cost of the cards.

It's mining. Cryptocurrency (bitcoin, ethereum, etc.) have been taking off in value. Bitcoin for example is supported by this system called the blockchain. People can set up their computer to run the mathematical equations and stuff that are what keep the system running, and they get paid in that cryptocurrency for it. The gpu is what does most of these equations, so people will buy literally 10-20+ GPUs for ONE SYSTEM in order to maximize output and make more money.

studio2308, I know someone who bought 15 of every version of the 1080 he could find for mining. He ended up with like 300 GPUs. For one guy. They buy tons of them, more than GPU manufacturers can possibly keep up with

Sold my RX-580 8GB for over twice what I paid for it retail during the first mining craze. Kicked myself for not holding out for triple.

Yeah my God it's ridiculous... I could literally sell my 1080ti right now, wait a month or two and buy 2 1080ti's...

Read that earlier. Informative. Learned something new from it; the massive increase in Chinese gaming. 64% of Steam gamers may be Chinese if Steam's survey was correct. Up from less than 9% just the year before! Crazy.

And with most of the rare earth metals needed for hi tech components mined in China, the West has little interest to build its own production plants here. Fortunately, that may be changing as the rest of the world is waking to the problem and opening its own mines: http://web.mit.edu/12.000/www/m2016/finalwebsite/solutions/deposits.html

So right now, the chinese are doing the equivalent of all upgrading at once, once they are in the steady state cycle of upgrading every-so-often, there might be bit of a peak every 2? years or so, but that will smooth over time. However what this does mean is that the market for AMD and Nvidia has expanded dramatically, so for the same profit they can sell more at a lower price, or they can take the profit and use it to buffer losses, or invest in next gen development, which is getting more costly with each generation. So the Chinese have solved the problem of each generation become harder to justify in terms of development.
