USB over current detected + 2 mice/keyboards

Hey everyone,

Let me set the stage:

I built my PC just under a year ago. Mobo is Asus ROG Strix Z270-E. All has been fine. Had a long gaming session on my day off yesterday, no problems. Shut down fine and went to bed. Woke up this morning to “USB Over Current detected/will shut down in 15 seconds.”

No one has touched the PC in between last night and this morning. I have spent the day going through the forum trying everything. Nothing works and I can’t even enter the BIOS.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that when I unplug/replug my mouse or keyboard, the periphery detection registers 2 mice/keyboards instead of 1.

Only thing I haven’t tried is complete disassembly and rebuild. Any ideas based on the information I’ve given before I go there would be useful.

Check your USB headers on the mobo. I ran into this problem when I connected a cable to an external USB plug backwards on the mobo. You may just have a loose connection.

Or just disconnect USB mobo connectors and do your mouse & keyboard through the on-board connectors. Then connect each external USB cable and reboot until you find the bad one. Then try to reverse that mobo connector and reboot again.

Lights go on, fans run, mouse and keyboard flash on. First boot screen displays, but will not accept input to enter BIOS, then goes to error message and shuts down. Everything I’ve tried has had this exact same rollout.

New developments:

This morning I was able to ID the problem Port. It’s on the Mobo with no outward signs of physical damage. No crossed or bent pins, no IO shield interfering. To boot, this particular port is normally unused in my build, designated for when I need to insert a temporary peripheral, such as a multi card reader or stylus pad, both of which have worked successfully out of said port in the past.

I’m starting to think this is a Mobo problem that requires a call to ASUS. If anyone has ideas on how to fix this without replacing the Mobo I’m all ears.

Hello there
I've been having similar problem. I just built a new gaming pc and now I get a message saying "usb over current status detected, system will power off in 15 seconds". I have tried unplugging all usb devices, disconnecting MOTHERBOARD usb jumper cables but nothing has worked.

Pleas help. Thanks in advance
