I was in the middle of playing Fortnite when my computer instantly shuts off followed by a burning smell. At first I had thought the computer may of simply just overheated but thought otherwise because of said burning.

I tried restarting the computer several times but all that would happen is it would try to start up but then instantly turn off followed by a short beep. I left it for a couple of hours and tried again, still without luck so I decided to open up the computer, clean out any possible dust and try again.

Also trying to follow other forums looking for the bios chip and its manufacturer etc. was a struggle for me.

I am not incredibly tech savvy so I thank you for your patience.

If you have an AST BIOS: CPU failure (1 short beep)
If you have an AMI BIOS: DRAM problem (1 short beep)

The rest of the error codes for short beeps usually are an "All systems go" indication. These are the only two which indicate problems.

I would try first using 1 stick of ram at a time (assuming you have multiples). Try each spot and inspect for anything that looks like burn marks. If you need assistant with the act, try a youtube search with a quick demonstration. It is pretty straight forward as long as the unit is facing the right direction. I have also read removing and replacing the video card may also help.

Next comes the CPU, which is a bit trickier. Check back in if the RAM option does not work and we can give this a re-think.

I tried using both sticks of ram separately in all four of the configurations however this didn't change the situation. It still tries to start up for a few seconds 5s-30s then followed by a quick beep, turns off. Turns back on then to continue turning on and off staying on for a much shorter period of time.

After every variation I have to power off from the PSU to retry.

Also no scorch marks visible in the RAM ports.

This is all I know, if you need more info could you tell me where to find it?

PSU: Thermaltake 500W (TT-500NL1H-1)
GPU: Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX 650
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H
Kingston RAM

There's a good chance it is the PSU.
I have had a couple of Thermaltake units fail before I realized they were not very good.
That would be my first bet. It's also a good idea to try to smell the source of the smell, and pin it down to the source.
