So, I got a mPCIe card out of a laptop, stuck it into a mPCIe to SATA adapter, and then stuck that to a SATA to USB adapter.

The system works fine; it can detect the drive. But, whenever I try to open it, it says "Incorrect Parameter". It's also notable that it was previously partitioned as two drives, but showed up as only one drive.
I've done chkdsk /r on it, too. But it only ended up as "Cannot open volume for direct access."

The adapters seem to be working fine. I don't know what's going on.
I doubt that it's from total hard drive failure. I attempted to do a Windows Reset before, and it processed just fine. But, when the system started up again, it just kept loading and loading. It went on so long, in fact, that I decided to force shut it down. I tried to turn it on again, but it bluescreened and said somewhere along the line of "cannot find boot file".

So, now, I'm on my PC, and trying to recover whatever files there are. I have strong doubts that it's hardware failure. Anyone mind giving me some advice? I'm thinking of using the Linux solution, but that's a hassle for a man of my small caliber (haha).

Thanks!

Hi

Personally i would get rid of the usb sata adapter and connect to the sata port of a desktop

Then run diagnostics on the drive like WD datalifeguard for windows
Before running recovery software
As if the drive sectors cant be read there is no point in normal data recovery software
Ddrescue can read a hard disk with some bad sectors (and continue with any good sectors) but not a dead or dying ssd or hard drive

You can get testdisk photorec in windows and linux versions
Linux versions Found on rescue CD or parted magic

I have referenced programs which are free or cheap, professionals will have expensive software and hardware

Hi

if the partition information is corrupted but no physical damage has occurred then software like Testdisk-PhotoRec from
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

may be able to rebuild the partition information

If the information is critical then you should goto a data recovery professional.
if important but you can't afford the data recovery costs create an image of the disk drive onto another disk drive of equal or greater size and run the recovery process on the copy not the original

There maybe software which can test the original drive is not physically damaged from the drive manufacturer (look at the label for details)

Or Western digital datalifeguard for Windows can do a quick test to check all sectors can be read

If any damage reported ordinary data recovery software will not help you and you will need specialist help

Thanks for your advice.
I am currently trying to use CGSecurity, but there's an issue: It's stuck on Please wait...
How do you do your third suggestion, by the way?

MiniPCIE are wi-fi cards.
Did you mean msata card? and Msata to sata adapter? and USB to sata adapter?
Like this?
What's the model name of msata card?

Nope. There are indeed mPCIe storage drives. And I made sure that it's mPCIe. The pin shape and count are different.

The CMT-128L3M.
On a related note, the image of the mSATA to SATA adapter is actually a mPCIe to SATA adapter.
The screw locations of the mSATA and mPCIe cards are different.
