Hello

I was messing around with Fallout 4 settings and i noticed that their is a choice to turn my game resolution up to 3840x2160 but my monitor is 1080p, now i know my pc can handle 4k gaming because i use to game on a 4k monitor with my PC

PC Specs
GTX 1080 TI 11gb founders edition
i7 7700k 4.20 ghz
16gb ddr4

i was wondering what exacally would happen does it actually make the game run better setting it to 4k? i don't really know, i know 1080p to 4k upscailing is a thing.

If the monitor's max resolution is 1080p, then it will never display any resolution higher than 1080p.

However, you can use nVidia's Dynamic Super Resolution (https://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/dsr/technology) so that the 1080TI renders everything at a higher resolution, then downscales the images to run at the lower resolution your monitor is limited to.

You'll probably have some options in the settings, but I would recommend the following:
-- if your monitor has a high refresh rate (100-120Hz or higher) at 1080p, you might want to consider setting DSR for 1440p to take advantage of the higher potential FPS
-- if your monitor has a lower refresh rate (60-75Hz) at 1080p, you could probably set DSR for 4K...

-- Modify as needed depending on the game's actual performance. For example, if the 1080TI struggles to hit 80-90FPS at 1440p in a particular game, even on a high-refresh rate monitor you're not going to get much of a benefit from DSR.

if the monitor is only 60hz a.k.a. max 60 fps, I think your PC can really push already 60fps on 4k.
Your PC should be able to push more than 60 fps on 1080p but since your monitor can only do max 60 fps, you see no difference between 1080p and 4k with downsampling.

I think, the card is set into downsampling automatically if you are using higher res.
