CPU Upgrade: iGPU crashes windows

I have an Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 board and was always running an i5 2550k with Intel HD 3000 and an NVIDIA 760. The two GPU's ran in parallel to drive 3 monitors, with my bios setting "iGPU Multi-Monitor" enabled

I just found an old i7 3770 which I plopped in. Initially had problems but after updating the bios everything seems stable (stress tested via Intel Extreme Tuning for 60 minutes)

HOWEVER, one thing that does not work is the iGPU -- this is now an Intel HD 4000. If I activate "iGPU Multi-Monitor", it turns on the iGPU and windows crashes before login screen: either the system self-reboots into "diagnostic mode" (after which a blue screen tells me windows could not start) or into BSOD with error on igdkmd64.sys

Things I have already tried:
1. Uninstalled old HD 3000 driver so only the new HD 4000 exists
2. Updated HD 4000 driver
3. Uninstall and then reinstall HD 4000 driver (note, when I tried reinstalling, it crashed and failed to install each time until I booted into Safe Mode)

Everything works if "iGPU Multi-Monitor" is disabled -- in this mode, the iGPU is not on. In device manager, the iGPU is hidden and it says device is not connected

Any suggestions? Is it a hardware or software issue?

Haven't tried that yet, was afraid to because if it doesn't work won't I have no monitor to boot into

Then maybe don't do it. It seems like it just doesn't work. Did you purchase it on eBay?

CPU was from an acquaintance who said it worked fine, though maybe he didn't have both iGPU and dGPU both on

Do you think a clean windows install would fix? I can also try the solo iGPU method, maybe a BIOS reset via jumpers would kick it back to dGPU mode, I was just thinking it was risky.

Just trying to test whether this is software or hardware somehow...
