Hi,
somebody is selling 2 sticks ram from Quad channel kits, Vengeance LED DDR 4 3400mhz and it is quite cheap.

can it be used as dual channel kit, since the profile given is for quad channel, and can it be setup to have this 3400mhz speed?

Solution

The memory will work you might need to manually set the timings, speed, and voltage. You might and might not get it stable at 3400 but 3000 should be easy.

im planning to buy i7 8700k, i doesnt have any specific motherboard in mind, but will take z370 chipset which i think only support dual channel kit.

answering your question again,
how RAM will works, how fast it can go is based on what Motherboard support
i7 8700k supports maximum non-OC RAM Speed up to 2666, this can go higher up to certain speed supported by Motherboard through overclocking, going above what Motherboard support is not suggested

**
also, there is almost no real-life noticeable advantages by going for 4 DIMMs

can you give answer based on the Quad Channel Kit ( it got 4 sticks of ram ), since the guy will only sell 2 sticks of ram, will it be considered as dual channel and will the motherboard take advantage of the kit timing configuration/ oc that already set by the manufacturer.

it maybe doesnt have real-life advantages, but since i consider to buy high performance ram, just want to make sure that i still can get that little performance that it can give.

yes, it goes as Dual-Channel (since it has only 2 sticks)

and RAM is not OC by default, their speed goes from the lowest (is it 2133 in DDR4) to the highest (their maximum tested speed, it can goes beyond, but its not suggested).

their Speed is configured from BIOS (Motherboard doesn't take advantages on RAM's timing, CPU does)

since current 8th gen supports only dual channel, go for dual stick ram,
its easier on memory controller (but higher timings)
(if you aim for 16gb RAM, go for 2x8GB RAM, so you can add another sticks in the future (though mixing RAMs is not [strike]suggested[/strike] recommended)

thanks, based on this, i decided not to buy the ram, since it too much hassle to manually set the timing
