Hello all,

I’m looking to upgrade my current CPU to something more efficient. My current CPU is the i7-7700(non k) Kaby Lake 1151socket. I was looking at the i7-8700k coffee lake 1151 socket but am unsure whether or not it will work in my current board?

I have the Asus Prime B250m-a Mobo. If this CPU wouldn’t work, what is another good option? I plan on using this for gaming mostly.

Thank you!

For gaming, clock speed is all important.
Your I7-7700 runs at 3.6 with a turbo of 4.2
The best you can do with your motherboard is a I7-7700K which will run at 4.2 with a 4.5 turbo.
That may or may not be worth it to you.

You can buy a I5-8600K for less that will be stronger. It can overclock all 6 cores to 4.7-5.0 depending on your luck in getting a good chip. I7-8700K is as good as it gets. But, most games are not going to use the extra 6 hyperthreads that it gives you.
If the $130 premium for the 8700K is not a problem, go for it.
You will need a Z370 motherboard and DDR4 ram to make the change.

Is that worth it to YOU??

It won't work.

You can only buy Z370 boards right now, with the best ones coming from ASRock, ASUS, and Gigabyte. You can't really go wrong with any of them though. Just pick the cheapest of your preferred brand if you don't have any feature preferences.

For current socket upgrades, you only have the 7700k, which really won't be a big upgrade considering you don't have a Z270 board for overclocking.

The 8700k requires a 300 series motherboard to work. Aside from the 7700k there is not much room for improvement there. You basically have one of the better CPUs for gaming.

In terms of efficiency, Coffelake and Kabylake are essentially the same as well. Minor improvement in core speed and they added more cores. At the same clock speed a Coffeelake CPU would use quite a bit more power.

^^^This, the 7700 is still a excellent CPU for gaming and will handle any resolution/refresh rate as long as it's paired with a good GPU.
