Hi, I just transfer my files to SSD from HDD. The files is about 220 GB. When I reboot the SSD, it's gone. But the size shown around 200++GB. It was only 1 partition, I select all the files, and do properties, its only listed around 20gb (windows 10 installation i presume). Its a fresh windows 10 installation.

What I want :
To retrieve the missing 200GB++ files

What i have done,
- I unplug the new ssd, and plug it to my PC through SATA USB
- I read the other posts (Same name, they found the "found.00" folder, and save it using windirsat but in my case, shown as unkown)
- I already check the hidden and hidden system files.
- I download the Windirstats, it shows "Unkown"
- Download the Tree Size, run it as administrator. Nothing shown. Only actual windows is shown.
- Try Recuva software, only few ( around 1 gb) can be recovered, its all on E: drive ( the name letter is E )

What I think:
- Something to do with the MBR ? its there, shown as used "200GB ++", but for some reason not shown. I'm not sure, SSD is a whole new world for me.

Other:
- Brand New SSD, Installed from windows 10 from PC
- Files copied from old laptop HDD to new SSD using SATA-USB Adapter
- Safely removed
- Missing after inserted (booted succesfully) on the laptop.

Solution

More likely - you did the transfer wrong.
What exactly did you try to transfer?

If it was windows OS, then you can't simply copy files from HDD to SSD. You have to perform cloning using specialized cloning software. Macrium reflect free - for example.

Hi, thank you for replying.. No no no.. I am copying file from a old HDD into a new SSD ( which already installed windows 10 on it ) as a USB devices ( using sata to usb converter ).

Then I remove the old HDD, and boot the new SSD into the laptop... It booted fine, until i realize my data was missing. I put it on a folder in windows installation folder when it was plugged as USB.

I turn it off, pulled it out, and then use my PC to diagnostic. On PC, It is listed as 200GB++ ish. But the folder isnt there.. Even if I already uncheck hide and show system folder.

Hi thank for replying..
I transferred family pictures, and some Korean Drama Videos.

Not Windows files, just simply folder from my Laptop's HDD into an already installed windows SSD. I copy it from 2nd partition into the only 1 partition on the new SSD ( next to the windows installation, like Program files etc)...

Wait what?
I have 1 laptop with HDD, and 1 PC.
This laptop I want to upgrade to SSD. Thus I prepare the SSD with a fresh copy of windows 10 installed.
I copy all my data from my laptop with HDD into SSD using the SATA to USB converter. It worked, I saw the files on the folder, and next to "Program files, etc etc".
I unplugged the SSD safely from the Laptop with HDD, then replace the old HDD in the laptop with this new SSD. It booted fine, until i realise, the folder was missing. With all my data on it.
I turned it off, unplug from the laptop, plug the SSD to my pc using that same SATA ti USB converter to diagnose it. The folder still missing, but I see the file size (220GB ++ used from 480 GB, 200GB free) on that SSD.

So, my file is missing.. please help

Question from aguswahyudi : "SSD File Transfer - Files missing but size is correct ( already read the other thread, still...)"

Ok - it's a bit clearer now, how you got to this situation.

To fix it:
  • boot your laptop from SSD;
    run chkdisk on your SSD (to fix any possible file system corruption);
    configure system restore by limiting size of it (all your copied files may have gone there);
    and connect HDD via usb-sata adapter and copy files over.
