Do I have to completely remove gpu from pc to use onboard video?

I think there might be a problem with my gpu, I want to test out my pc using the onboard video from my motherboard/cpu.

Can I just unplug the gpu from the power supply and plug in my hdmi to my motherboard or do I have to completely remove the gpu from the pci slot?

Usually unplugging power cables form GPU should be enough - but some motherboards will detect the card anyway and refuse to boot, displaying message to connect power to GPU instead.
Changing BIOS settings would be easier, but if you have no display problem that method is out of question.
If all above method fail, you have to physically remove GPU from board and disconnect power plugs.
