Hello,

I’m building a new computer with coffee lake because everything about my old computer is too old. I need Windows 10 and updated hardware. I will be giving my old computer to someone else I know, who can update windows if they wish.

Old computer specs:
Case: cm 690
Cpu: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz 8M L3 Cache 4.8GT/sec QPI Hyper-Threading Turbo Boost LGA1366 Processor
Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe V2
Ram: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
Hdd: 2 Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive - OEM
Optical: LG Black 22X 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVD±R DVD Burner – OEM
Psu: Corsair TX CMPSU-750TX ATX12V & EPS12V Power Supply
Vista Home Premium 64-bit OEM
Cpu heatsink: Scythe MUGEN-2 SCMG-2000 120mm
Case fans: scythe s-flex

Approximate Purchase Date:
Within a month. I will have a local custom builder order the parts and put it together for me.

Budget Range: $1000-$2000. The important factors are quality, reliability, silence, and speed. I want the computer to be as quiet as possible.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
Productivity. Multitasking with several programs (word, excel, photo editing), surfing internet with lots of tabs. No games. No rendering. No heavy video editing.

Are you buying a monitor: I will get a new monitor eventually, but it is separate from the computer budget. I don’t know what resolution it will be.

Don’t need keyboard, mouse, speakers, sound board, WiFi/Bluetooth, monitor.

Parts to Upgrade:
Do you need to buy OS: Yes, full Windows 10 home

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com, and amazon for reference. I dont know who the custom builder will use.

Location: SLC, Utah, USA.

Parts Preferences:
CPU: intel, coffee lake i5 8400. I don’t think I want a k because don’t they run hot?
Mobo: asus
Graphics card: evga nvidia, quiet card
RAM: g skill or crucial, 16G (2x8), low latency
PSU: Tier 1 high quality seasonic gold or higher unless there is a quieter/more reliable/better one at the same watts. I’m thinking 650w will help keep computer more quiet than 550w, but maybe I am wrong. I don’t need fanless. Want semi or full modular.
SSD: Sata, Samsung (pci-e is too expensive for quality).
Optical: reliable and fast
Case: something unassuming, quiet, reliable, and with good airflow.
CPU cooler and fan: do I need one? Is the one with coffee lake too audible?
Case fans: Quiet, but great airflow. Double ball bearing. Not sleeve.

Overclocking: I might overclock RAM, but added heat means added noise, so I don’t know.

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: currently it is 1280 x 1024

Parts I have selected: only 3 so far.

SSDs
(1 for Windows boot, 1 for main, 1 for backup). I chose 500 for windows boot and programs because I do not want to run out of room.

For heavy multitasking, doubled threads from I7 is good to have. You don't need dedicated gpu for your purpose. IGPU on the CPU is good enough. I will get this:

Thanks. I like the idea of getting the i7 8700 and using integrated graphics. Should I get an aftermarket cooler? Is the included fan for the i7 noisy?

I prefer the ASUS Prime Z379-A, for reliability. What g skill or crucial RAM 16G (2x8) should I get for this mobo?

If I decide to get a dedicated graphics card in a few years, will the Seasonic focus plus gold 550 be enough, for keeping the system quiet?

Thanks!

I built an i5-8400 with 16 gigs hyper furry single stick, no graphics card, corsair 450 watts. Ssd Samsung evo 120 gig

This machine is a beast , super powerful, can open like 200 tabs+ full adobe suite and more.

Its supper quiet and runs at 36 celcisu average.

Super fast, super quiet, runs super cool, highly recommended
