Laptop doesn’t boot

I recently got an old IBM Thinkpad T21 off ebay under “for parts or repair”. It didn’t come with ram, battery, modem card, and power adapter. I bought a 3rd party power supply, works good. Did not yet buy a battery or modem card (probably will never use a modem card). The maximum supported memory is 256MB, but I got an old 512MB stick out of my other old laptop. I stuck it in, plugged it in, it turns on, but will not do anything else. In my experience, the symptoms shown say that the laptop does not recognize the ram. I took the ram out and it still does nothing. Before I go and buy the correct size memory or anything, is the problem here that the laptop will not recognize the 512MB stick because it’s not supported? Or could it be an issue with the motherboard. I tried both slots, didn’t make a difference. I have another pc that is very very specific of what ram goes in and where, and it can be a pain to boot when it sits for a long time, such as this laptop sitting for years. The laptop acts the same as my old desktop, it turns on and just stays on one LED light forever and won’t do anything else. Is it the size of the stick that it won’t recognize or is it something more?

Just speaking from my laptop experience. My Dell Latitude had a RAM slot fry on me. Had to limit it to 1GB until the second RAM slot died on me. The RAM, itself is good.

Am I certain it's a dead motherboard? Of course not, but unless you're willing to spend money testing it (buying supported RAM), I don't see any point of moving forward.

So you’re positive it’s maybe a dead motherboard? I still have a feeling it doesn’t want to boot the 512MB ram because it’s too big. Again, I have another pc that does the same thing if it sits for a while and it does not recognize any ram and won’t boot, but it takes a little bit of playing around
