Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with rewiring my home network. I have limited experience with networking and I'm not sure if the panels I have are for telecom and data or just telecom.

I have uploaded two more photos the yellow rj45 port is connected to the modem and the other ports lead the cabinet. So basically all I need to do is rewire the port leading to the cabinet for data and the assemble the cabinet accordingly to the room I would like data to go to?

Also is it possible to add a second router as an access point between the two ports photographed?

Photos are attached below.

Thank you,

Moot

Solution
Depends on if you can move the inbound line to the house or not. If you can't, you may just need to run an RJ45 cable from the modem to the equipment upstairs.
That looks like wiring for phones and phone patch downs. It can handle both data and phones, its just about how the twisted pairs are configured. The cabling is the same. I don't see a modem through. Do you have a modem anywhere? Some ISPs either provide an all in one router for data and phones or two separate modems, one for phone and one for data.

They can be used for both, you have twisted pair ethernet cable, if you look along the sleeve it will tell you if its Cat5 or Cat5e. data will use a minimum of 4 cores, data usually uses just 2 cores (single pair). In Europe we would normally punch down all pairs for ethernet but an RJ11 plug will insert into a RJ45 socket and just use pins 4 and 5 (blue and blue/white) to carry an analogue voice line. Obviously this would be separated out in the comms cupboard and patched onto your telecom line instead of data switch.

I do have a modem, the technician installed it downstairs. I assume I will need to move my modem for all of this to work?

I definitely won't be able to move the inbound line to the house. Thanks for the info!
