win 7 loses restore points

i expect post about a virus etc . doubt it. checked with AVG, Norton and f-secure
some will suggest some unheard of software to solve the problem - but who knows what else it puts on the computer.
what is the REAL reason it deletes all its restore points?
and what is the fix?
thanks experts!

PS 400gb allotted for restore points- 0 used

I would try manually creating a restore point to see if it turns up. Windows key ->create a restore point

Windows updates can also delete restore points as they will not work with a newer version of the OS.

Malware generally doesn't delete restore points. That actually would be counterproductive because infecting restore points is far more useful. Most modern malware modifies any system restore points it sees to make it's life easier and ensure survival. Most techs are trained to delete all system restore points as step 1 or 2 of the malware removal process.

windows key - > sysdm.cpl - > System protection tab - > Configure

What is your "Max Usage" set to? Try moving it up to 20% or higher and see if that helps restore point stay. Careful not to hit the Delete button.
