At 256 bitrate, an average of 5:00 min. per song and with 250 hours how much gb would that use about? Would I be safe with a 1tb external drive?

HERE is a good scale to so estimate file size, and 256 bitrate is about 115.2 MB/hour. So 1TB should be plenty large.

My music archive has over 60,000 songs and is around 405GB, it took me years to rip all my old albums and CDs and the size varies up to 320, so it is well backed up. :)

1TB is more than safe for 250 mp3 files. I have about 300 disc worth of ALAC music files as well as 25 1080p movie files on my NAS & I only managed to fill about 250GB of storage. 250 mp3 files is quite small, even 100GB is more than enough.
