Hello everyone,

I am looking at upgrading my CPU around the summer and I am not sure about what to get, an I5 8600k or I7 7700k. I will have to upgrade my motherboard either way.
I currently have 8gb of DDR4-2400 Ram and an Asus GTX 1060 3bg OC, along with an i5 6500.
They seem to be around the same price (~£260) so I am wondering which one would be the better option for gaming, and occasional editing of game clips, as the i5 has 2 more cores.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

My gut says 6 physical cores is better than 4 +ht but I dunno. From the i5 6500 you're looking at a 10% perf increase in gaming and light editing. If you're set on upgrading, go for the most current platform aka Z370 and the 8600k.

I wouldn't buy a whole new motherboard to get the 8600, you're not going to get enough of a performance boost to reflect the monetary investment.

Not sure why you say you will need to upgrade your motherboard either way, If you have a skylake board you can update the BIOS to run the 7700k, if you need an upgrade thats the only one thats worth it.

He probably has a h110 mobo or similar non-overclocking-friendly.

As a side note, know that any k series cpu will require the purchase of an aftermarket cooler.

I have an asrock z170 extreme 4 mobo and I wasn't aware that I would just need to update the bios

Clearly thats what he may have. The CPU will still work with it though with a BIOS update. Right now the 7700k is cheap even if you don't replace the board and can't overclock, its a good deal.
