Stereo or 7.1 Surround sound for hearing footsteps?

Hi, I'd like to get a gaming headset to hear footsteps and details in game. Should I get a Stereo or 7.1 Surround Sound? Please recommend. Thank you!

Using Aorus Z370 Gaming 7 motherboard.

Real 5.1 headsets are usually not THAT good, or you have to spend lots of cash.
I would go with a good set of cans (not headset) from sennheiser or beyerdynamics, and get a seperate mic, and a dedicated soundcard.

The HD558 are pretty good and can be easily modded (removing the rubber strip inside the housing) to get the sound of the next bigger ones (HD598).
Get something like the asus Dx or Dsx card, and use the Uni drivers (google).

Im using the 558 with a Dx, and frontstage as well as sound positioning is much better than with any headset i ever had, incl a real 5.1..

sure, they use the same drivers like the 558/598 have.

they tend to let more sound into the room (vs closed case most others do), but it also prevents your ears from getting hot (like with closed cans), and sound is more "airy".
most ppl dont like the flat sound (missing a bit bass), but thats mainly for music and you can just use the EQ in your music player.

one thing:
as with most good cans, let them run playing music for about 24h (changing type of music with every other song if possible)
they wont produce "correct" sound until then, and if i wouldn't have known that, would have returned them the next day..


Update:
friend of mine (Pvp player with clan in top 10 for germany) wanted to replace the HD 518 he got from me.
he tried the tp models from logitech/astros/corsair from 2.0 to 5.1,
returned all of them and is now back to the sennheisers and ordered the GSP 600..
