I am wanting to move my old SSD from my laptop to the new PC I just built. Can I just slap the old drive in my new rig and keep all my files or will having windows 7 on it mess with it somehow? I have my new rig set up with windows 10, I know I can't transfer and use the old OS on my new rig, I just want to transfer my files and use my old SSD for more storage. Will I need to transfer and backup all my files then wipe the drive or can I just throw it in my new setup?

This depends on what you mean by "files"
Ideally, you should copy anything you want from that drive, delete all partitions on the drive, and then copy them back.

Yes, you can 'take ownership', but it is much easier if you copy them elsewhere first, wipe it, and then copy them back.

That Win 7 install is just sucking up valuable space, and complicating access to your data.
