Hey there, I've been searching for a solution for weeks but couldn't find anything just like my issue so I'm asking this community for help. two years ago I built my first PC, which has been working flawlessly ever since, until a few months ago i encountered a sound driver bug: when rebooting the pc, suddenly my back panel audio output stopped working. the only sound possible to hear was coming through my headphones which are plugged in into the front panel jack. when trying to adjust volume, those 'died', too. i tried reinstalling drivers, which worked - but the next time i resart my PC, the issue is back again. I've tried everything from clean installing windows to updating the bios and am extremely frustrated because the issue persists. strangely enough, sometimes the back panel audio output works when i unplug the headphones from the front panel. the system always shows audio as playing (Music visualizer working without any sound coming from either device). My oculus rifts sound however always works, its plugged in via USB. i tried using an USB sound card but that just produced the same issue again. Is my Mainboard/CPU dying? somehow the issue was gone for two months but now its been back for two weeks and im out of ideas on what to do, please help me!

Hey Jojesa, thanks for the reply.
Specifications are:
Intel i5 4460
16GB DDR3 RAM
GTX1080
550W PSU
ASUS B85m-e mainboard (the audio chip is a Realtek® ALC887-VD)

The drivers i am using are the newest from the asus website page of software for my specific mainboard: Realtek Audio Driver V6.0.1.7770

OS is Windows 10 64 bit, drivers say they are compatible with that. Device manager never marked any audio device as faulty.

I will try the older driver install later. Yes I get a plug in detection notification, although not always. There Board is still in warranty, should I contact Asus about replacement or keep trying Software solutions?

alright i tried the older drivers.. problem persists. everything fine after the install reboot, but the next reboot kills it. the installer promts me to reboot after the first one (at this time everything works), after which its broken again. the issue is startup related then, isnt it? another thing i noticed is that at the second reboot (which "destroys" it again), some USB devices arent working and i cant use the windows button. Very very odd, does that maybe give you an insight on what the issue could be?

Windows has a popup saying "Your pc must restart to finish setting up this device [REALTEK HD AUDIO DRIVER], does that mean that , when it works, im running it with native windows drivers and nothing else? if the installing kills it, is there any way to block the system from doing whatever it is doing with the audio drivers when restarting?

Windows 10CE has had several issues with legacy mobo drivers, especially audio and Lan. Check the dates on the last drivers posted for your mobo, they should be dated late '17 or so. If not, you'd be better off downloading the right driver set from Realtek website, as those will definitely contain any and all compatibility patches from Win10CE.

Yes allow Windows to install the drivers, see if that fixes the issue.
In case that does not work then you can replace the drivers with Realtek drivers.

Neither worked, the newer ones in fact don't even work after the first restart... I'll contact ASUS for replacement and keep using this painful double restart until then. Thanks for trying to help!
