Is my gtx 970 still good enough?

I have upgraded my i5 7500 to a i5 8600k yesterday and I am planning to overclock it sometime soon. I have the asrock z370 extreme 4 pro 4 mboard.

So I am a little curious if my 970 (I have the msi gaming version of the card) is good enough for another year or so of 1080p ultra settings gaming? I have had this card since it was released, I bought it brand new for 500$.

Right now I have no issues with the card except when I overclock it past 1550, some of my game will crash (gpu error or gpu memory error) but some games like gta5 and beamng and my summer car love the oc.. Could a bios mod fix these things? Through msi afterburner the volts seem to be locked, as in I can't control it even if I activate voltage controlling in the settings..

But apart from the troubles of ocing the card, it does run every game at 19:20/1080p at max settings. If I overclock it i can see a +20 to even more of an increase of fps. The temp never past 70c from the time I owned the card.

Would I benefit from a newer gpu as of right now since I got a higher end cpu? Or should I wait untill games get more intensive on the card, or just whenever the card decides to die out?

You could keep the gtx 970 for a while until games get even more demanding, however you could upgrade to a even better card as your cpu is quite powerful. I'd wait for a bit till you start seeing frame drops in newer games.

Ah yeah, I was thinking of the 1060 6gb model though back when it was 260$ canadian.... Would there be a better overclocking program to oc the gpu without the games crashing and giving me a memory error or such? Or would a bios mod work better? I do know the risks of one, but I have modded the bios on my old evga 660 sc. And it worked perfectly

Without reading your post I am going to say yes. It's certainly getting long in the tooth but it still a solid mid-high settins card that can handle ultra on some older or less intensive titles. It isn't weak by any means. I had my EVGA 970 FTW for a couple years and have since moved on to EVGA's 1080 Ti FTW3 Hybrid. Now, let's see what you have to say.

First question asks about another year in the gaming arena. Absolutely yes I would keep it for about that long or maybe a little less depending upon pricing. Currently, as has probably been mentioned, gfx card prices are stupid high so buying one right now is a major waste of money.

I am not familiar with BIOS modding. I do have dual-bios on this card but have yet to dive in that deep. You did say 1550. That sounds like your core clock. Maybe you need to lighten your memory OC or underclock it. Idk.

The 1070 will certainly be a major boost in performance. I'd aim for a 1080. Nvidia's new Volta line will probably be out by years end so things may change.

It would be a terrible time to buy a graphics card right now, with all potential upgrades being priced around double what they should be, and it will likely be a number of months before prices get somewhat reasonable again. A 1060 would not be a worthwhile upgrade either. A 1060 6GB would only offer around 10% faster performance than your existing card, which would be barely noticeable. You would want to move up to something with at least 1070-level performance for it to be a worthwhile upgrade.

Also consider that the current graphics card designs are over one and a half years old at this point, and that there will most likely be a new generation of cards coming later this year.

For BIOS mod, you can take some queues from here...

for quite sometime nvidia able to keep things to themselves only. meaning we heard less rumor but the bomb just drop out of nowhere (some people believe that nvidia gaming pascal would not coming out to the market until Q4 2016 before). price wise the x80 most likely go for $599 just how it was with 1080. but the most interesting part probably on the mid range and lower. the x60 might be able to roughly match 1080/Vega 64 performance for $250-$300 just like 1060 at $250-$300 matching 980 performance (launch price $550).
