So I recently made my new PC and I got 8GB of ram for it. I have 12GB of ram in my old PC, and I was wondering if I was able to add that 12GB into my new PC to get a total of 20GB of ram. If this is possible to I need to unplug everything and then add it, or can I just turn off my PC, put it in the slots and then secure it?

You should be fine with powering off your computer. As long as your motherboard can support 20gb and you have enough open RAM slots, you are good to go. Keep in mind if the sticks are different speeds (PC) then they will operate at the speed of the slowest stick.

How do I see if my motherboard can support it?
I have 4 slots for ram.
How do I see the speeds of them?

You also need to ensure they are the same type of RAM. Seeing as you have a "new" PC and an "old" PC, it could be DDR3 and DDR4 RAM, which you cant mix.

Additionally, even if everything else were the same, there is no guarantee that non paired kits (that is, kits you didnt buy in one package) will work together at all.

Touche, I just assumed they were all either DDR2 or DD3 one way or the other. You can look up your motherboard's capacity simply by Googling the model number. It will list a maximum PC speed as well as a maximum capacity.
