Hello. My current system(old faithful), has been keeping the family gaming and finishing up homework for 5 years now. Here's the specs

-i5 3570K oc'd @ 4.2
-gtx 660ti 2gb video card
-Antec Kuhler H2O 920 Liquid CPU Cooling System
-MSI Z77A-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1155 DDR3 3000 OC USB3.0 SATA 4XPCI-EX1 2XPCI-EX16 2XSATA3 Motherboard

- 8 gb ram
-120 ssd
-1tb hdd
-620watts power

My big question is, would it be worth it to drop a gtx 1060 6gb or a 1070 8gb into this system or would I be wasting my money due to bottlenecks created by the rest of my dated components? The CPU still feels strong but maybe I am blaming the video card for some of its age also? I would like to get as much out of a game like farcry 5 as I can without a full on rebuild.
I am not set on any card in particular so any advice and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

3770k is on the same socket as the 3570k, so you can get extra performance without having to spend alot on a whole new platform. Your power supply is also enough to cover either 1070(msrp: $399us) or 1060(msrp: $299us), and the 1070 would keep you from having to upgrade a little longer(half a year longer, maybe) than the 1060.
Some of the newer games can use more than 8gb of ram - no need to get more...

If this is on 1080p, then either card would be fine for you. The bigger issue is the gpu prices at the moment(they suck right now).
There's no need to upgrade everything at once - that's what makes desktops so awesome! Instead of having to spend lots more $$$ on a new platform, you have the still viable option to upgrade to the 3770k and 16gb of ram... again, it doesn't have to be done all at once!

the real question is - can you play your games ?
If yes, wait till summer for the next gen cards from nvidia -more performance for the same money (or same performance for less money)
If not, to suggest you a card I need to know what is your monitor resolution and refresh rate ?

My monitor is 1080p 60hz

Thanks for your input. I wasn't sure about compatibility with my mobo.
I Was in a local chain store, in Canada and they have a couple Zotac 1070 8gb for just over 500 dollars. In light of the recent stories of sky high card prices my jaw dropped. Thinking of going back for it. Also had a 1060 6gb for 400

Some of the newer games can use more than 8gb of ram - no need to get more than 16gbs. It's recommended to get a brand new kit, as mixing(getting another 8gb stick) is a dice roll - it doesn't always work.
One step at a time, you don't have to blow all your $$$ at once.

Thanks for the advice! I ended up finding a 1060 6gb at suggested retail price so I went with that. Didn't want to shell out the extra 200 bucks for the 1070 as the new cards are coming soon. Really happy with the performance.
I will probably upgrade to 16 GBs of ram next if I start to feel like it's not meeting my expectations. So far things are going great! Thanks again you guys and your advice are worth your weight in gold and much appreciated.
