Upgrading from i5-2500k

Hey, I've got a budget build gaming pc at the moment and I've found a deal online and want to know if the upgrade is significant enough to go for.

Present:
I5-2500k
780ti 3gb
20gb ddr3 ram
gigabyte ga-z68ap-ds3

How much of an improvement would it be if I replaced the gigabyte ga-z68ap-ds3 and i5-2500k with:
I5-4690k
Asus z87 plus motherboard

Is this an upgrade worth making on a budget? (I can buy both for a total of about £150 right now)
or is there something better for a similar price?

Also I'm not really very clued up on the whole generations in terms of how much improvement they bring etc. The reason for the upgrade is that I have access to a closed beta game to play on my stream, and the game is pretty optimized right now and I'm struggling with FPS (between 20-50fps) I know that this may not fix the issue however if the upgrade is significant enough it won't matter as It will last me longer and it's pretty cheap considering I can sell my mobo and cpu and recover some of the outlay.

Any help appreciated.

I will have a look at the 3770k, I'm kind of at the junction where I ideally need to be upgrading to the 1151 socket but of course to get something worthwhile it means new motherboard, new cpu and new ram. Considering I have 2 pcs in my stream setup it gets expensive, I'm putting it off as long as possible!

If anyone else has any other ideas I'm all ears though.

Is there a particular reason for 'needing' to upgrade to 1151? What you currently have is still good. Plus, the 2600k and 3770k that velocityg4 suggested is a more significant upgrade than your initial proposal, which is less than a 5% improvement over what you currently have. The streams will run smoother on an I7 anyways as opposed to the I5. Bonus points for sandy bridge cpus being better overclockers than either ivy bridge or devil's canyon. 2600k and call it a day.

If I was looking to take the plunge and upgrade to a different socket, DDR4 and new cpu with a budget of about £300-400 (overclocking capability) what would you recommend?

As you currently have 20GB RAM. How much RAM will you need. Because 16GB or more will eat up a huge chunk of your budget. The motherboard will take another huge chunk. With what is left. The CPU you end up with will be hardly any better than what you have now. The i7-2600K is still the best option. Definitely the most economical.

Basically If you want something which is appreciably better than an i7-2600K (overclocked). You will want at least a Core i5-8600K. Although for streaming plus a long use life with the latest games. I'd want an i7-8700K or Ryzen 1700 (1800x if you won't OC). Although on the Ryzen front I'd hold off for the 2nd generation Ryzen.

Uhh, don't. It just isn't necessary in your situation. If gaming/streaming is all you do, getting the I7 for your current platform - either 2600k or 3770k - is the best option. Then, upgrade your gpu further down the road.

The problem I have is that I have access to 3x closed alpha games, all 3 are massively un-optimized and my current set up just cannot handle them very well. Having the extra leg room will future proof my system to play at max settings as well as being able to play the latest closed alpha games at better frames.

I've put an I7-2700k into my gaming pc and overclocked it but it's not really improved from the i5-2500k.

Out of interest is this bundle a good deal? https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-prime-z370-p-s1151-atx-motherboard-plus-intel-core-i7-8700k-coffee-lake-6-core-unlocked-oem-cpu?v=b

They offer finance.

I tested an i7-2700k earlier and it made a slight noticeable improvement in fps on the closed alpha games i've got access to for streaming, so ideally if I am going to make an upgrade it needs to be significant, I posted a link to a bundle I saw on scan.co.uk that offer good finance. (https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-prime-z370-p-s1151-atx-motherboard-plus-intel-core-i7-8700k-coffee-lake-6-core-unlocked-oem-cpu?v=b)

My choices are:
1) Make a small upgrade that may or may not help me with fps in these games.
2) Overhaul my entire system and have a better chance of improving fps in un-optimized games/
3) Wait for the games to be optimised and potentially miss my chance of drawing in people to my channel as everyone gets access.
