Old GPU works in my system, but new one doesn't. New GPU works in friend's system.

So I bought an MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X recently, I put it into my system and there was no display, The lights lit up and the 2 fans spun.

I tried my GTX 960 (which was meant to be replaced by the GTX 1070) thinking that the GTX 1070 was DOA. The GTX 960 works without a problem.

In fact I am using the system with the 960 in it to write this.

So thinking that the 1070 was DOA, i put my GTX 1070 into a friend's system to test and it worked!

I thought that the PSU was the problem, so i replaced it with the corsair CX 850M. Still no video output with the 1070
Maybe it was the motherboard, so I replaced that with the ASUS h81m-plus. Still no video output with the 1070.

I have tried many things out, including the DVI-D port (i usually use HDMI), but nothing worked. I am absolutely confused . This is what is in my system at the moment- excluding the GTX 960 (to be replaced by the GTX 1070 when i get a solution):

Motherboard - ASUS h81m-plus (used to be the MSI B85 E45M)
PSU - Corsair CX 850M (used to be the FSP500-60HHN)
CPU- Intel i5 4690
Main storage- 120GB SSD
Secondary storage - 1TB Seagate HDD
RAM - 1x 8GB HyperX Fury (DDR3)

1 extra thing. I can boot with the GTX 1070 when i plug a VGA cable into the onboard graphics.
Please help me fix this issue, I would greatly appreciate it!

EDIT:
BIOS is up to date

Solution
Ok, I am back.

Since we left off, I have sold the MSI 1070 and bought a new 1070 with the money. It works :D
Only God knows why the 1070 didn't work in my system only :p

I tried to update BIOS on my old MSI mobo. Went on the website, got it on a USB, flashed it and bricked the mobo. I didn't interrupt the flash either.

Can you tell me what I did wrong. Cos right now I am scared that I might brick this one.

And yes I did uninstall my old drivers. I am using my 960 without drivers atm.

If you didn't interrupt the flashing of the BIOS, and your power in the house is stable, it might just be a coincidence that the motherboard died.

When you got the new motherboard, did you re-install Windows on your OS drive? If not, there will be conflicts with the chipset and other drivers, since the old drivers are embedded into the OS install. I would do a clean install of Windows, followed by installing your chipset and GPU drivers.

What I did do was use the Windows 10 's reset function to 're-install' my OS, but it didn't help.

Does this count as a clean install?

I don't think so, please tell me if this is the case.

BTW, I can't install my GTX 1070 drivers if Windows can't recongnise my GTX 1070 ( I made an edit at the end of my question about the 1070 being able to run when i plug in a VGA cable to my integrated graphics)

I am not sure about the reset function being equivalent to a clean install. What do you mean by the 1070 being able to run when you plug a VGA cable into your integrated graphics? Do you mean you can now see the 1070 in Device manager? If so, you should be able to install the drivers for it while using integrated graphics.

No, they aren't PCI x16 slots.
It can't be the PCI slots on the motherboard as the same problem existed when I used my old one.

How shall i check whether I have disabled the gtx 1070?

Not sure about that. but my friend's motherboard shouldn't matter because my mobo will work with the 1070.

Used command prompt to check the BIOS version:

American Megatrends Inc. 2205, 26/05/2015

This is also the latest BIOS on the ASUS website as well.
So it can't be my BIOS being out of date.

Press "Del" on the ASUS logo screen to load the BIOS.

2. Select "Exit/Advanced Mode," then "Advanced Mode." Use the directional pad to select the "Advanced" tab.

3. Scroll to "System Agent Configuration" and then press "Enter."

4. Select "Initiate Graphics Adapter" and then press "+" or "-" to change from the value to "iGPU" to "PCI"

5. Select "Exit," then "Save Changes & Reset" to restart the computer

Already made my primary display PCI-E, doesn't work. If this was the problem, then why is my GTX 960 working?

Have you connected both the 6 pin and 8 pin power connections on the GPU to the PSU? I am assuming you did connect both power connections when you tested it in your friend's computer. Make sure the power cables are firmly inserted into the correct slots (ports) on your PSU.

Yes I did that. With both PSUs as well.

I don't know what to say. Per PCPartpicker.com, that GPU is compatible with your motherboard. I assume your cpu is the i5 4690, not 4960 as you typed in your specs above. Wow, the GPU is really expensive currently.

About all I could suggest is to remove the GPU and re-install it, making sure that it snaps into the pcie slot and the power cables are tightly connected.

The interface per the GPU's specifications page is Pci Express x16 3.0. I could not find whether the x16 slot on your motherboard is 3.0 or not, but when I selected your motherboard in PCPartpicker and then searched for compatible GPUs, your specific GPU came up as compatible.

The mobo i had before (the MSI b85 e45m) had pci-e 3.0 on it. It still didn't work. (even before i bricked it)

At this point, I would probably try a clean install of Windows. Disconnect your secondary drive when doing this so Boot Manager files don't get written to that drive. Then install your motherboard's drivers and "hope" the 1070 shows up in Device Manager.

If that doesn't work, contact MSI and see what they suggest.

Instead of doing the clean install , I am about to give it to a professional to look at. he lives a few doors from me. If the problem is fixed, I will let you guys know.

Thank you for your time. Feel free to post any solutions you may have though.
