inside one of these combination boxes is there a physical switch, cable modem, and a router or are they virtualized? Does anyone have a link to a break down of one of the motherboards(like what each component is) that would be inside of one of these combo devices?

What you find varies a bit. Used to be you would find a separate router CPU and switch chip but many times the newest routers have it all integrated on a single chip. It still functions as multiple chips.
