My house right now has a network closet that has my modem, WiFi router, and a switch that sends 1 cat5e to each room. Well my kids all have gaming rigs, smart TVs, etc. since there is only one port in every room can I add a small ethernet switch in each room? Will it slow down speeds a lot in each room since there will be 4 devices technically being branched off one cat5e connection? My sons share a room and like to ps4 game together so wondering if speeds will still be good?

Yes

No ... well, if you had a file server in your closet and 4 devices on the same switch all tried to download at the same time, they would just get a fraction of (I assume) gigabit speed you have currently have. But I expect that would be a rare occurrence.

Yes

Get some good quality gigabit switches and you will be very happy. I suggest switches with 1 or 2 more ports than you have devices now because we are always expanding what gets plugged in.

**edit** remember also that a 4 port switch will only serve 3 devices. One port will go back to the wall.

Hi, I'm in a similar situation as yours. Except the gaming room is in the basement with 3 PC's. 3 CAT5 cables run from my wireless router to 3 remote switches around the house: one in the living room (4-port), one in gaming room (8-port) and another in the entertainment center downstairs (4-port).

I made sure that the infrastructure is composed of 1 gigabit ethernet equipment so transfers between PC's (and NAS for backups) are very fast.

So in your case, go ahead with a dumb switch (no need for those intelligent ones) and it'll go fast and no special setup is required. And they're cheap too!

Good luck!
