HELP? PC/CPU Freezing/unfreezing while Gaming

I am having severe issues with certain games (like black desert online/warcraft) that I am playing, and other high intensity processes(video rendering/prerendering). My computer seems to be locking up. I'm not experiencing drops in frame rates for instance from 60fps to 30fps or lower, but instead I'm experiencing fluid high framerates and then complete stops, and then a split second later everything unfreezes and catches up.


I've talked about this issue with a few friends and they've commented I need to update my CPU and/or motherboard as that may be the main issue for performance freeze/lockups.

I've heard many different ideas on how to fix but I haven't asked an open forum and I'm hoping to get more of a definitive answer on what might be causing these issues, and how best to fix it. Any more information on the issue needed let me know.

CPU = good for entry level gaming

Board = cheap but it will do and get the job done. If it doesn't work out of the box or develops issues I would RMA it ASAP. I've found Tomahawk boards to have the highest failure rate out of all AM4 motherboards. RAM and video card detection are the biggest issues I've encountered causing the system to fail to start.

RAM = Ryzen generally is better run at faster RAM speeds like 3000MHz. This RAM should work at the base 2133MHz but if you want to spend more, consider a faster kit or going with 2x4GB config. You also would want to make sure the kit part number is listed on the motherboard QVL. You can get by on this though.

Cooler = Not needed. The stock cooler on Ryzen processors is fantastic and...

It seems to me like your processor is bottlenecking your graphics card. The freezes can be happening because the CPU gets so far behind the graphics card that the graphics card needs to stop for the CPU to catch up. The 6350 processor will severely bottleneck a 1060 GTX.

I recommend either doing a complete rebuild on Ryzen or a newer Intel platform. Even an older intel platform like 5th-6th generation Core i5 would be a huge improvement. The 6350 is nowhere near good enough and it's a waste to use it with such a powerful graphics card. An upgrade would also solve the issue if it was the motherboard that was the problem is AM3+ motherboards are known to have many issues under heavy usage.

Are there any chips I can switch to for an affordable price to stop the bottlenecking occuring? Or do I need to replace the cpu and motherboard entirely to stop the seizing up? Would appreciate some recomendations. Trying to get something on level with the GPU but I'm on a limited budget

There are no chips that you can switch to at all that stop bottlenecking. You could upgrade to a stronger CPU like the 9590 or 9370 but I don't recommend it in 2018 at all. Bottom line is the FX chips aren't the greatest.

- If you went to the strongest AM3+ CPU you can which is the FX 9590, you would be going from serve bottlenecking to semi-bottlenecking. If the problem is your motherboard then the upgrade wouldn't help at all.

- That 970 motherboards have frequent electrical issues and have issues with their VRMs. They fail often. The processors are also very inefficient and are slower than Intel i5 processors from 5 years ago. My i5 2500k is 50% faster and about the same age with the same TDP. Even the 2500k has issues sometimes bottlenecking me in certain CPU intensive games, when panning the camera in some games I see my FPS cut in half for about a second. I could go for the best i7 Ivy Bridge on my socket but it's better to just upgrade to the newest platform generally.

I'd recommend saving for an entry level Ryzen system like:

Ryzen 3 1200, comes with cooler, easily overclockable
Cheap basic B350 motherboard
8GB DDR4 RAM

That's all you would NEED to buy. You could put these parts in the old case and reuse the PSU even. You could bring the GPU and drives from the old system as well. Yes, you really want to get off the AM3+ platform.

This cooler you selected is only needed for if you were overclocking or you just want to have a liquid cooler. As this is a budget build, you would be better off taking the money you'd spend on this cooler and put it towards a better CPU like a Ryzen 5.
