I need to use my wireless controller from a distance well beyond the range. However my router is pretty close by. Can I plug the receiver yo routers usb port and with some software use the controller on the computer...?

I could not clearly understand your statement and appear to be contradicting itself.
"my wireless controller from a distance well beyond the range. However my router is pretty close by."
I suggest you review it so we can help.

Are you trying to say: You are planning to connect your computer to a USB port in your router to get internet .
The answer is: No. The USB ports in a router are there for connecting a storage device or a printer.

If you don't have an Internet port on your computer, then you need a Ethernet to USB dongle .
You will connect a Ethernet cable from the router to the Ethernet port on the dongle and then plug the dongle to a USB port on you computer.
By the way if you have an Ethernet jack on your computer, it can be connected straight to the router.
