I am going to swap the I3-2350M @ 2.30 GHz, with a Core i7-2620M. Are all the I7-2620M processors the same, or is there something special I need to know about a particular type or model.

Also, I have the max 8GB ram in the system. Would I need a new motherboard to increase the RAM?

Solution

1) No you do not have to stick to 2nd gen. You can also swap a 3rd gen CPU in, they have the same socket, as listed.

2) To avoid overheating / throttling keep the column TDP of the linked...

Are we talking about a laptop? Is the processor not soldered onto the motherboard? Are you sure you can swap them?

Both processors support PPGA988 socket, they are interchangeable.

Yes max memory size is limited by the motherboard.

It is not a soldered on cpu, it is a laptop with the screw that locks the cpu to the motherboard. I am choosing the I7-2630M one to swap because it was listed as a compatible one on another post here. Do I need to swap within the same generation. These are both 2nd generation cpus. Can I go up to 3rd on the Satellite P745. Does the wattage and GHz need to be below a certain number to avoid overheating? The list of compatible CPUs are here:

thanks!

2) To avoid overheating / throttling keep the column TDP of the linked table in mind. You would step up from 35W to 45W, that is 30% more heat your laptop has to dissipate. It should manage that.
