I am trying to unscramble an issue before I waste the last 2,000 bucks on a computer for my friend. He likes to game, and I don't know if I should buy an i5 or i7. 90% of the time that I see a gaming computer it has an i7, but is it really worth it to buy? Is an i7 really that much better than an i5? Or is it just overrated and addicting?

An i5-8400 or i5-8600K are great for gaming. The 8600K can have some extra useful life with overclocking. There are very few games where an i7-8700K would be an advantage. Even then only at 1920x1080 when trying to achieve extreme FPS.

I wouldn't waste money on an older generation i5. The new 6-core models I mentioned have a substantial advantage in some games with a minor price difference. The old 4-core models do struggle a little with some of the most demanding titles.

Fill this in as best as you can and we can fully help you since an i5 or i7 is a case by case decision.
