I have a HP Pavilion 23 All-in-One 23-b017c running Windows 8.1 with an AMD A4-5300 with Radeon HD 7480D APU. I recently upgraded my drivers but I would like to upgrade to a better APU. I don’t really game on my PC but I run Adobe Creative Suite and I feel I could use more processing power. Can you please provide recommendations? Also, would you recommend upgrading the RAM from 4GB+2GB to 4GB+4GB for a total of 8GB RAM DDR3?

Specs:
APU: A4-5300 with Radeon HD 7480D
RAM: 6GB DDR3
Motherboard: HP AAHD3-AB
Socket: FM2
HDD: 2TB

You could definitely add some more memory to the system and more cores, but the single thread performance wont be a night and day difference. I've included a list below of all of the chips that work in FM2...

PassMark says that's a pretty sad CPU, so upgrade it if you can. Recommend you go to their website to figure out what CPUs are worth in the scheme of things. Memory helps if you're running out of it, otherwise it doesn't help. Recommend replacing 1 thing at a time and see if your situation improves to your satisfaction. If it becomes good enough, you're done.

You could definitely add some more memory to the system and more cores, but the single thread performance wont be a night and day difference. I've included a list below of all of the chips that work in FM2, the socket your machine uses, and system specs with the recommended upgrade list from HP. It looks like you're limited to 65w chips, you could try a 100w chip, but I have no clue if theres the thermal headroom for it. Otherwise an A10 5700 should work, and you could try an a10 6700 to see if it would boot with it. Also I would recommend upgrading to 16gb of ram if possible, the move to 8gb isn't worth it really, so shoot for 16gb with the fastest ddr3 sticks you could find, if not 16gb then at least 12gb should be your target. I've also included an ebay link for some 8GB SODIMMs, and you may want to consider upgrading to an SSD if you haven't already. At the end of the day though, its time for a new computer or a new build. If you're considering a new build I would still hold out for a few months since memory and graphics prices are insane. If you cant wait then AMD's new APU's launch shortly and they should provide you with an excellent upgrade from your current system, but memory will still cost you, its roughly $170 for 16GB DDR4 right now, not even the great stuff, just so-so DDR4 2400 memory.

Solution
180W PSU is going to limit any upgrades, and the fact that it's an AIO.

You're not going to get much of an improvement with the allowed APU upgrades.

Processor
TDP
Trinity Dual-Core A4-5xxx
up to 65W
Trinity Dual-Core A6-5xxx
up to 65W
Trinity Dual-Core A6-5xxxK
up to 65W
Trinity Quad-Core A8-5xxx
up to 65W

My 2 cents, save for a new build.

Did the SSD last year. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks!
