Hey guys,

So I've just swapped out my mobo from an Asus ROG Rampage IV Extreme to a new, bare-bones generic Intel X79 Motherboard LGA 2011. I can get the PC to boot to bios but it won't boot to my ssd, it displays the 'Reboot or Select Proper Boot Device' error and it's being very pedantic about little things like if I don't let the capacitors shut down completely then there's a chance it won't boot into bios/won't boot to a usb at all, sometimes the keyboard won't be connected (it's lights wont turn on) etc.

I took it to a repair shop a few weeks ago when I was diagnosing why the pc wouldn't boot at all and they told me all the parts were fine except for the cpu/mobo which they couldn't test because they didn't have any LGA2011 parts. I took it to a second place which did have a compatible cpu and they told me the board was busted which was good to know for certain. I bought a new, relatively bare-bones board (as a placeholder until I get new parts [gpu, mobo, cpu]) to get the system up and running again and now I'm having the issues as above.

I think it's possible that although it's new, the mobo is busted? I haven't personally tried my ssd on another pc (mostly because I don't have access to one), but, again, the first place I took it to told me all my parts worked (-cpu/mobo).

Things I have tried:
-Changing boot order in BIOS, ensuring AHCI is selected
-Clearing CMOS (multiple times), replacing CMOS battery (brand new)
-Booting to USB (I used a Windows 10 version which I'm 100% certain works because I used it to install windows onto a friends brand new clean ssd literally 2 days ago) which results in freezing on the windows logo, keyboard stopping, freezing on the blank blue screen where language options for the install would usually be displayed, freezing on the language options for the install (which is as far as I ever got on the usb) - it's not that I even wanted to install windows again, I just wanted to see if it'd boot to the usb
-Booting to USB running most recent version of Bunsen Hydrogen
-Checking literally every connection, switching SATA cables around
-Reseating GPU into the top PCI slot (it was interfering with a sound card due to board size but I moved it because at this point I couldn't care less about the damn sound card)
-EDIT Booting to USB running Linux Mint ver 18.0 gave the error codes
[ 5.004820] [drm:drm_add_edid_modes.part.26 [drm]] *ERROR* Unknown HDMI VIC: 50
[ 5.004877] [drm:drm_add_edid_modes.part.26 [drm]] *ERROR* Unknown HDMI VIC: 25

Parts in build:
Intel X79 LGA 2011
Intel i7 4930k @ 3.4Ghz
Corsair CML16GX3M2A1600C10B 16 GB (2x8GB) DDR3, 1600MHz
Samsung 256GB 2.5-inch SSD 840 Pro Series
Seagate Constellation CS ST3000NC000 3.5" 3TB Enterprise
ASUS GTX780 OC Edition (GTX780-DC2OC-3GD5)
Corsair h100i
Seasonic 1250w PSU
OS currently installed on SSD is Windows 7 x64

Any advice on what to do short of taking it back to the pc repair shop or sending the mobo back (which at this point is a high probability) would be very highly valuable

Thanks in advance

make sure the new mb bios is up to date to rule out a bios bug. 0on some of the older mb there can be two sata chipsets the intel and asmedia. the asmedia will not boot os drives. make sure your on the intel sata port 0. under advance mode look at hard drives make sure the boot drive is the ssd and not windows boot manager. one thing to check is see if the other hard drive is locking the sata chipset or another device. pull all the cards and drives. use just the onboard video if you can and just the ssd.

Forgive me, but as I've never had to update a bios before and cannot for the life of me find a straight forward walkthrough, could you please lay it out for me in very very simple terms?
lXWMQVa.jpg

I can't tell if I'm running ver 2.17.1247 or ver 4.6.5.4, which is the bios version? Am I looking for Aptio 4, is that right? And once I have the file, I have afudos, afuefi and afuwin folders which then have .zip files (some have a 32x and a 64x version), which one do I use? And what's an AMI type bios? Is that what I have? I know I probably sound like an idiot but it's so ridiculously difficult for me to find these sorts of basic questions set out in a simple manner, maybe that's why people dont ever update their bios.

I also can't find 'Intel Sata Port 0' or similar, is it under SATA Configuration? All that gives me is the option to change between AHCI, RAID or IDE modes and then a huge list of 'Port Hot Plug's and 'External SATA Port's, where would I find that?`

I can't pull the gpu out because the mobo doesn't have any video out

I think it's possible that this motherboard is some sort of server board not designed to run an operating system. I've just found an ebay listing for the same board (from a different seller) with a review that concludes "This is basically an alpha engineering board not fit for end users." (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HOT-BLACK-SERIES-X79R-AX-DELUXE-V1-0-USB-3-0-LGA-2011-INTEL-X79-ATX-MOTHERBOARD/222761643147?epid=23010355115&hash=item33dda0ec8b:g:q1sAAOSwjlBaON-H#rwid)

I think I'm just going to send the board back and buy one with an actual name.
Also, I still have no clue how to flash the BIOS - American Megatrends makes it so insanely ridiculously difficult to understand and find what I'm looking for, I have literally no clue where to find a .rom file from their website. As far as I can tell, it just doesn't exist.

with bios update as you dont know the vendor of the mb dont try to flash it you brick it. on the top menu that says boot is the ssd listed. if it is set the boot order to usb stick then ssd. from microsoft web page use the windows media creation tool make a new windows 7 usb stick. also make a windows 10 stick. see if one of them will work. if there boot from the ssd. look on the mb sata ports. the 6g ports if there there will be a diffrent color. if your on that port and there no boot look for black ports (intel thta marked 0/1/2/3/4. try black port 0.

SSD is listed, yes. I've tried all ports including port 0 (the one it's in now) to no avail. I don't have a black SATA port 0, I have two white 6GB/s ports, port 0 and 1 then I have 4 black 3GB/s ports, ports 2/3/4/5. I've had some success though it would seem: If I set the CSM Parameters to UEFI only I can get the pc to get to the Windows 7 loading screen but it freezes before getting into the actual OS, I was so excited too!! :( The options look like this:

I can't, for some reason, get it to boot into the usb anymore. I used to be able to and now I can't, I think it has something to do with the CSM Parameters which I've now changed, any ideas?

It seems as though I can't boot to the usb at all unless everythings set to legacy and even then it freezes and I can't get it to boot to the SSD unless everything's set to UEFI and even then it freezes before it makes it to OS. I think the board is screwed

PC doesn't show anything to boot to with CSM disabled, the only option is Windows Boot Manager and if I try to boot to that, it just gets stuck on the Windows 7 loading screen again.

Well it seems as though I can now get to and from safe mode with no issues, the problem was, as I suspected, the CSM Parameters. The pc refuses to boot properly with them disabled and UEFI modes cause freezing, I have all the options set to Legacy except for the boot filter which is set to UEFI and Legacy. The boot order in BIOS goes: Windows Boot Manager -> SSD. SSD SATA port doesn't matter. Mashing F8 when the pc boots allows me to enter safe mode, but other options like Repair Your Computer and Start Windows Normally result in crashes/freezing. I suspect that I am going to have to backup and perform a system restore in safe mode, does that sound right?

Alright, performed the system restore successfully and now it freezes/doesn't load into windows normally. The first time it displayed a BSOD I couldnt get a pic of the STOP code and now I can't get it to BSOD again, it just hangs on a blank screen. I can now successfully boot into Safe Mode with Networking with no issues, I assume that's a good sign. I updated the graphics drivers but nothing happened. Can't system restore again because there aren't any more system restore points listed. There's no way to update any other drivers because windows update doesn't launch in safe mode, so I'd have to update them manually. I've tried disabling all the startup accessories and tools apart from Windows stuff, it didn't make a difference, still wont boot normally. Now I'm seeing if it'll boot to a USB, so far just freezes/crashes.

I tried removing all hardware with exclamation points (mostly network stuff) to no avail. I am hesitant to remove ALL hardware because presumably the pc wont work without gpu/cpu drivers (Am I being stupid?)? I can't get the pc to boot to a usb and I can't for the life of me figure out why. There's some option in the BIOS that's stopping it and I don't know what it is. With CSM Parameters set to DISABLED, the system will not boot to either the SSD or the USB - It has to be enabled.

I have had the most success with the boot option set to 'UEFI/Legacy' and with all other options set to Legacy, but those might still be wrong. I have made a new bootable USB using the program Rufus and now the USB shows up as 'UEFI: Sandisk', so it's recognizing that at least. There's some combination of settings that it needs to be on and I've tried a lot but evidently not all of them. I'm so close, I can feel it! Thanks for your help so far

Forgot to also mention that once I managed to get a BSOD while trying to boot to the USB:

Not sure if it has any relevance, the STOP code seems to refer to a hardware/BIOS error, so that'd make sense. I've sometimes gotten it to the blue and green windows 7 image background but it freezes before displaying installation instructions. I don't suppose I can reinstall Windows 7 from within safe mode to circumvent the whole 'can't boot to a USB' problem?

UPDATE: I managed to reinstall Windows 7 by just taking the ssd to another pc. Funnily enough, I tried booting to the SSD first and it wouldn't do it so something was corrupted I guess. Anyways, booted to a usb, formatted the drive and installed windows successfully, boots to it and I can do everything as usual (had to install drivers first). Took the SSD out, plugged it into the original pc and it still wont boot to the SSD, just gets frozen on 'Starting Windows'. Tried various different CSM Parameters to no avail. It boots to safe mode just fine, yet again. I think the motherboard is buggered, it's the only explanation I can come up with. Any other ideas?

Well I waited weeks for a new board to arrive, I got a used EVGA 132-SE-E775. This time the PC is turning on but won't POST at all. Either I'm having a huge losing streak with these boards or I'm doing something drastically wrong. The connections are fine, I just want my PC to work :(
