Hey guys,

Recently bought a five-year-old house with cat5e phone lines and I’m looking at changing some of them to RJ45 ports to create a wired network but I’m a bit confused about what’s going on.

There is a box in my basement with a total of 8 white cables and 3 blue cables. There is a bundle of 3 white cables and 2 blue cables with the blue and blue-white ends spliced together. There is another bundle of two white cables with blue and blue-white ends spliced together and a third bundle with 3 non-terminated white cables and 1 non-terminated blue cable.

Looking through the house, I find 5 phone lines wired with white cat5 and 1 phone line wired with blue cable. 1 of the spliced blue cables from the basement is missing. I found 1 white and 1 blue non-terminated cables with 2 non-terminated white cables are still unaccounted for.

What is the best way to accomplish what I’m trying to do? Can I just terminate all the wires at the phone jacks to RJ45 and then terminate the cables in the basement at a patch panel or switch?

Is there a way to tell which cable is coming from the network Interface Device outside without actually tracing it?

Here are some pictures of what’s going on because I know it sounds confusing.

Do you have a voltmeter, a 9 volt battery, and lots of patience? You can build your own line tracer ... or for $15 you can buy one off Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M28WT3I/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_6_w .... (I have never used this product, so I don't endorse it ... do a search, read reviews).

The short answer is yes, you can just put a patch panel in the box. You will also need a switch, a bunch of 6-12 inch Ethernet cables. Then just replace the phone jacks with RJ45. Make sure to label everything, you really don't want to do it twice. Make sure to disconnect the service at the Network Interface. Phone line voltage will fry Ethernet equipment. I personally like to have my modem in or near the box, but it's not required.
