I currently have this modem/router

I used it mostly for streaming around the house and for my computer I plugged in directly. Unfortunatly I learned how inadequate it was when I recently got a roomate and had to move to another room in the house. I am surprised at the difference as it is a small 1300 square foot house.

Now I am getting 20 and often 5 or less mbps. IT is much less consistent and very unreliable. I changed my modem from a USB dongle NIC to a PCIExpress NIC, but that seems to help little. That might be due to the fact that the only slot left is at the bottom of my computer.

I do have a nicer NIC coming from newegg that has an antenna you can place on the desk. I am not sure that will make a difference, but if it does not, should I get another cable modem/router? Would a signal repeater or powerline adapter work well enough? I have seen some powerline adapters that also send out a WIFI signal.

Problem with that plan is it goes up to 1000mbps, but if the original modem maxes out at 300mbps it might not have a point (although that 300mbps limit might be its wifi only)

Many have the same problem: wired connection is great, wifi is MUCH less. My wired is 120+, wifi is low 20's in SAME ROOM as router,etc..I've been told by geeks that my cable modem[comcast isp]is SB6141 is OLD and my wifi router WNDR4500 is also OLD and both should be replaced, but..when i read the reviews, omg, it seems everyone is whinning about...

Is your room mate hogging all your bandwidth? Does he/she upload a lot? (Bittorrent can saturate a router with too many connections, even if it isn't using much speed, and using the vast majority of your upload can also cause your download speeds to drop significantly).

What kind of a plan are you getting from your ISP?

no he has not even moved in yet.... I found out when I moved my stuff, which also requires me to switch to (ugh) wifi or give up my master bedroom.

when plugged in directly I get 60 MBPS.... The router is like 20 feet from where I am but there are several walls in the way.

I am confident it is wifi related... either the current one is weak... or the NIC is weak, or both are weak.

yeah I know it is for powerline, but I have heard mixed things about powerline also. I DO know that powerline would be only useful to me if it had wifi boosters at the ends for my Roku and Firesticks. The other problem is that I have read when high current appliances run it affects the effectiveness of powerline adapters. In some ways it seems like it would be better to simply run a hardwire in the attic. Of course that does not fix the wifi issues with the devices that you cannot hardwire.

That is why I am asking if getting a new much more powerful router would be a better idea. I am not worried about getting 60mbps like before, I jsut want a reasonable speed like 20. Before recently I had 10mbps and was happy. Right now it is so inconsistant that pages do not load and the firestick is often buffering.

There has to be something else going on here. I can't imagine that your current router cannot handle the walls. What I would do is install a wifi scanner on your phone (if Android I just use WifiAnalyzer) and see if there isn't another signal that's blasting in on the same wireless channel as the one you are currently using. If so, use channels 1, 6, or 11 (if 2.4GHz) as those are non-overlapping (use the one with the least amount of interference on it).
