CPU runs on high temperature even after reapplying thermal paste.

I own a i5 4690k and since few days it's normal temperature had risen to 44C on idle which is much more than the usual 33-35c. Under load it was 80C

This happened outta nowhere but I thought since I hadn't cleaned my PC in two months, that could be the reason.

So I cleaned my PC and cleared the dust off my heatsink and reapplied thermal paste. At first I had put a bit more than needed so PC didn't boot up but I removed that using isopropyl alcohol and reapplied and made sure the plastic bins of my stock cooler are well placed and tight.

However, still my rig is running on high temps. In fact, now under load it goes up to 100C. When I run small ffts in prime95, it goes 40 to 90 in 3 seconds.

My stock cooler is running fine and has 2k+ rpm as I'm running it on full speed.

Honestly, I don't think my original thermal paste itself was the issue because it wasn't dried up. It came off pretty easy just by using a cloth.

The new one is a pretty cheap one tho and is liquidy. Could this be the reason? I've failed to understand what's causing this sudden rise in temps....

Old thermal paste might cause a few degrees difference. Not a 20 degree difference. You don't need much either, just enough to fill any microscopic voids between the surfaces. Too much paste is worse than none at all.

Even dust and fans won't cause a drastic increase in temps. The only time I've ever noticed such an increase in temps is an improperly installed heatsink that didn't have the pressure on the CPU. Make sure the fan is spinning on the CPU.

You may be just getting bad temperature readings.

The fan is spinning and it's tight as i ensured all the pins are deep in and tightly fixed. It's an intel stock cooler. I am checking the temps on HWMonitor

Your cleaning and reseating looks like it increased the temps. It may be on tight but the evident temps. suggest it may be crooked. I'd upgrade to a 212 Evo when you can afford it. Because your temps. are so high your performance will be reduced in favor of relatively cooler temps..

When you check temps. always get a second opinion from another program.

I was using Hwmonitor, Speccy and HwInfo.
