CPU fan speed error + Overheating CPU

So this morning I went to turn on my PC and the pump fans were going full load, I checked the temps and the CPU was up top 100C. I've done nothing I wasn't doing before. Although I recently reinstalled win10, being the only change I've made I'm stumped what the problem is..

after checking various other posts for similar issues I found that my CPU pump IS connected to the CPU fan header on the mobo and there is definitely flow in the pumps. The radiator and the block are cool too the touch.

Any ideas guys? Pics provided below

I thought I'd like to mention that I've never figured out why the CPU fan and the other channel fans show up as 0 RPM on the BIOS but this was a problem way before I reinstalled the os so I'm not too sure if it's actually significant or not. I'm fairly sure it's mounted correctly and I'm also quite certain that all the drivers are installed.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the cooler installed is a Corsair h100i v2

You should be able to change pump speed and fan speed. But it should be plugged into the CPU fan header. Mine won't even boot if it's not.

Stupid question but are both fans plugged into the block?

I'm going to go ahead and say something is wrong with the cooler. Either faulty or not connected properly.

Are you setting the pump/fan speed in Corsair Link? Their products are stupid sometimes and they can only be reliably controlled via Link.

(I have the H115i)

I use AI Suite 3 for all my case fans but the CPU pump and fans are not even responsive to that.

It DOES need to be plugged into the CPU fan header or it will not show up. I plugged it into the pump header once and it didn't boot. Got same error message you have. I would just double check that the fan connector on the block is plugged into CPU_FAN


I now see that this is all happening in the BIOS. Does it boot at all?

I haven't installed Corsair link and the CPU fan header is connected to the block.
After the error message it does post straight to Windows 10 and I can use it normally but the temperature is still climbing.

I've also downloaded Coretemp and the temperatures seems to be the same as their report in BIOS so I believe it's not a sensor issue either. An the motherboard temperatures are also pretty low

I would download Corsair Link and try to change the settings there. If you crank the settings and the temps don't improve you may have a faulty cooler.

Apologies I'm new to the forum I don't know how to quote but I'm going to give that a try but the thing is the fans on the cooler do change up and spin much faster as the temp rises, I can only assume this is a good thing and ifaik there is flow in the pumps. Looking at the mounting bracket, one of the screws seem off but the unit is tight and making good contact. Also I've seen someone mention their cooler had a plastic backplate but the backplate or lack off on mine looks completely different?

Yeah that looks totally different from mine. But if it is making solid contact it should be fine. And yeah I don't like that fan profile that comes with it. I would set it to a fixed fan mode. Like I said, crank up the settings (100% fan speed, 100% pump speed) and see what happens. I would also try changing the fan orientation and see what happens. Are they set to intake or exhaust? There should be an arrow on the fans to indicate which direction they are going.

Let's talk about TIM.

What are you using and How did you apply it? or did you just use the stuff that came pre-applied on the copper plate?

After having another look around I've noticed theres cable that connects the block to the USB header is not plugged in and I don't know where that cable is.. secondly I use the thermal paste that was supplied with the cooler preinstalled.

I do have a cleaning kit and more paste on standby but I think this cable might be an issue as the link software is unable to detect the pump

EDIT: as I cannot find this cable is it something that I can easily source? As far as the fans are concerned I have no idea what configuration they're currently set up

That's the Link cable and yeah that might be an issue. If I am remembering correctly that is how the pump and fans are controlled via Corsair Link. However it sounds like it is still working properly.

It's pretty much a standard micro USB cable that connects directly to the MB via a USB header. I'm not entirely sure but I think you could even plug it into a USB-type A port on the rear I/O panel and it *should work. You would need a micro-USB to USB-Type A cable. But the cable should have come with the cooler.

I would remount the cooler with some better TIM just to be safe, not sure what Corsair uses but I remember changing mine from theirs to Arctic MX-4 I got about 8C cooler on my CPU. What have you got on hand?

So the cable I can obtain online but I don't have one to hand right now. As for thermal paste I have a standard cooler Master and noctua thermal paste that I can use

Are either of them silver-based? I wouldn't use them if they are, just my preference though. Silver is electrically conductive so technically it is more dangerous to use.

Go for whichever you have is better on this list:

Very small difference but since you have both might as well go for the better one.

Just a very small BB sized dot in the middle, that's widely considered the best way to do it.

It SHOULD tell you if that's a problem. Then when you get the Link cable you can adjust speeds accordingly. It's a really stupid setup on Corsair's part, but for the cooling performance I get on my H115i I can't complain too much.

I've got the cable and I've switched the pump header from the block into the pump header. Corsair link shows that there's nothing coming from the pump but recognises that it's there. So if I take off the cooler and put on the stock and the temps are the same it's down to the CPU right?

after trying everything with the cooler, I took it out and placed the stock in there and I'm now on stable temps. It looks like the pump is faulty. Time for an RMA.
