Something is eating my disk space on drive D

Solution
It helped!1. To see the space allocated and used for SVI:

– Open Command Prompt with “Run as Administrator” option

– Type in: vssadmin list shadowstorage

– You will see Used Space, Allocated Space and Maximum Space for SVI

2. To see the restore information stored therein:

– Use in the same console command: vssadmin list shadows

3. To resize the maximum allocated space:

– Type in command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[here add the drive letter]: /For=[here add the drive letter]: /Maxsize=[here add the maximum size]

– E.g., vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=4GB

– You will see a prompt confirming resize done

– You can check the status again using the command discussed in point 1 above

4. Just to get rid...

what happens if you highlight artykuly as that appears to be where all the usage is, then click on a box that matches the color using the most (in your above pic, purple = mp3 files

the percentages don't make any sense, do they... even if artykuly takes up 96.9% its still only using 7.1gb

have you run chkdsk and/or hdtune on hdd to make sure its just not losing space from age. In my last PC my boot drive was randomly losing space and I didn't know why.

So this explains the difference between 142gb and its capacity, C is on same drive. C&D are just partitions on the ssd. So what is affecting D is also a problem for C.

try HDTune and check health tab.

Have you run anti virus? what is on D? One way to get all the space back is to format it.

not sure if it will help but can you right click start
choose disk management
take a screenshot and show here.

I have to go to sleep now but someone else might think of what I am missing.
Front page of windirstat shows right space and yet its not when you look at the drive. How odd.

that screen isn't disk management, it should look like

MTE7LGg.jpg

it probably won't explain the missing space but it might. Something eating 130gb and not showing.

I wonder if its backup - it would show in settings/update & security/backup if it were.

if there is nothing on D you need, try formatting it. right click partition in disk management to do that. Careful not to format C by accident.

I will look in here in morning.

I did look yesterday, the web site hosting screenshots wasn't working so I couldn't do a lot. It is working now but I have to go out for next 10 hours so I won't get a chance to help you until then... I will look at shots again. Disk management clearly agrees with the usage but what is using all the space is still a mystery.

i have asked for fresh eyes on this thread, hopefully someone will help us figure out what I am missing.

if it was a hdd, I would say sectors are being corrupted and thats why nothing seems to be using the space up. But SSD don't have sectors and I don't think dying ssd would be gradual, and chkdsk & hdtune found no damage.

nothing in the file system according to windirstat is anywhere big enough to explain the losses. That why i suggested it was backup or file shadow copy but system restore isn't normally this hungry and should have shown up in windirstat as a yellow box marked unknown... it didn't.

Run malwarebytes and see if it finds anything.

Do you use onedrive?

check system restore, see how much space allocated to it (probably on C anyway but worth a look).
run defrag (even though they say not to on ssd, it won't hurt - win 10 runs it once a month anyway)
could it be steam updates?

is hdd activity normal? Normal should be 0, any processes constantly using space?

Try booting into a linux live USB and see if it shows the contents of the drive. I don't get how its not showing in windirstat. There is a huge discrepancy between front page showing size of drive and space used, and what actually shows in the directory structure. Something is missing

not a virus
not maleware
not ssd - unless 2 tests are lying
not torrent (Did you delete it before and remove folders?)
not page file (as it should show in windirstat, I assume its on C partition)

running out of ideas besides a format of the partition. If that doesn't fix, need to look at what programs you are running.

Hmmm now when i looked up in task manager there are a lot of programs running and eating a lot of resources with name :

Try this to fix werfault.exe

right click start button
choose powershell (admin)
type SFC /scannow and press enter
once its completed, copy/paste this command into same window:
Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth and press enter
SFC fixes system files, second command cleans image files, re run SFC if it failed to fix all files the 1st time, and restart PC

The werfault.exe is used for Windows Error Reporting. It is a feature that allows Microsoft to track and address errors relating to the operating system, Windows features, and applications. It gives you the option to send data about errors to Microsoft and to receive information about solutions.
