PC Crashes after certain games are played

Specs:
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760
CPU : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Memory : 16.00 GB RAM (15.94 GB usable)
Current resolution : 1920 × 1080, 60 Hz; 1920 × 1080, 60 Hz
Operating system : Microsoft Windows 10 Home
PSU: Corsair 750W

Recently my pc has been crashing (no BSOD, just inky black void) when playing games, specifically Grim Dawn and Fallout 4 (Cant even get past the opening character creation in F4)

Checked for updates to drivers, all updated afaik.
Check whocrashed with "No valid crash dumps have been found on your computer" (although I may have been doing this wrong)

Mobo reads about 40C with only a browser up but read 63 at time of crash (fans typically come on louder as well) Overheating seems to be the issue but im unsure where to start. I have a Master Cool heat sink that appears to be loose (the heat sink itself has rotated slightly and moves freely if prodded) Heatsink does appear to be caked in dust in some areas, going to try remedying this next.

Any other suggestions or tips? not sure what else i should be doing besides crying.

Well, first things first, you need to address that loose cooler it might be over heating and shutting itself off. Also, clean the dust out of your system completely, but be careful not to spin your fans at all, you might want to get new thermal paste for your cooler too, I recommend arctic silver or I C Diamond

I think i have some arctic laying around not sure, might be what came with the heat sink. I dont recall it spinning freely on install so this is my best guess as well. Rest of the case is clean just the fins on the heat sink are bad

Crash in games can be attributed to an hardware failure also. It happens. My 1080 FTW died 2 times in less than a month and was having numerous crashing behaviors when I was closing a game. The signal was dropping often to. It doesn't happen anymore with my 1080 TI duke. It happened twice in 6 months, so it was obviously the card.

All I am saying is it could be your GPU and not software related.

For Fallout 4 do you have the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2012 installed?

Okay so i dont have any good thermal paste, just a tube that came with the Evo 212 from like 3 years ago or so but i did clean out the heatsink as best I could.

Additionally, according to threads here and elsewhere, there is some play that is to be expected with the Evo 212 (which honestly is a bit scary since it literally moves around on the cpu)

Anyway, booted up Fallout 4 and it crashed again. Is there a better way to test rather than booting up the game every time?

Will try to un-mount and add new/better thermal paste when i can get to the store and buy some (although at that point i may just have a tech at the store look at the pc anyway)

Try using Aida 64 to stress the cpu, but not the GPU, and if ti crashes its something with the CPU and its not a GPU based problem.

You should see a window with 2 graphs and the usage and temps. It doesn't stop itself unless it crashes or the system trips over current protection. Let it run for about half an hour to an hour.

So its been a little over an hour with no crashes on Stress CPU only. Should i use the same program to stress the GPU next?

Ok ill give that a try, any specific settings to look out for or just the stress test? IS stressing it necessary? There seem to be a fair amount of warnings stating it could kill my GPU. Is there something else i should be doing to rule out GPU issues?

Stressing the GPU at max for hours on end, or letting it overheat while stressing it is pretty much the only way stressing it will hurt the GPU itself, other than that just run the test, if it holds stable try some games again.

You can try reinstalling the driver or trying one that's 1 or 2 older than the newest, but most likely your GPU is going bad it is an old card.

Yeah tried rolling back with a driver from Dec 17in conjunction with DDU. No change still crashes. Going to run Memtest86 just to be sure but I think its a waste of time. Who knows? Time to research mid range GPUs now. Thanks again!
