What's the best CPU for LGA775?

Solution
I agree with alex, however if your using lga 775 for other reasons like a secondary system or are in another country and can't afford anything newer, the Q9550 is the best core 2 CPU out there.

You'd think the Core 2 Extreme variants are, but the latter steppings of the Q9550 typically overclock higher than even the Core 2 Extreme CPUs.

You know the Q6600 Kentsfield is also a really good overclocker too, you can often hit 3.2 to 4ghz (4g on water)

Q9550 also has a lot more L3 Cache, so either way the Q9550 is better, if it's priced well.

If its priced well, though the Q6600 is a very good budget CPU for 775 and overclocks faster than the base on the Q9550

old post, i know, but if you don't have the money to get LGA 1150's, then i recommend Xeon X5460, it catches up with CPU's for 1150 and 1151 sockets, i had it and trust me it's much better than core 2 extreme or anything in Q series

That Xeon is LGA 771, not 775. Adaptering it is stupid and isn't worth it for an old server CPU that most likely isn't supported by that board.

775 is an old socket and isn't supported anymore. I don't recommend using it unless your going for an old style or super low budget build. With that out of the way, the only good way to start answering this question is to figure out the motherboard, assuming it's already owned, and get the best CPU off the supported list for the task that will be at hand.
