The cpu would hold back (bottleneck) a gtx 970 or 1060. If OP gets faster RAM (16 GB, DDR3-1066 to DDR3-2200 supported) and a 1050 he can use his platform for many years to come for gaming.
Otherwise it depends on the use case as mentioned above.

Just because his CPU is over 9 years old, does not necessarily mean he needs to upgrade.

It largely depends on what he uses his machine for? Old CPU's (especially Quad Cores) are still very capable of running up to date games but as said, depends on what he uses his machine for.

As I said, it depends on what he is using the PC for and what games he plays.

If he's just playing CSGO 'for example' a GTX 1060 or 1050 is overkill.

We need to find out what he wants to do with his machine before we can suggest what he upgrades to. Plus cost will come into factor.
