Hi
One of my module in my Gskill DDR4 Tridentz 3200mhz 16gb 8x2 kit went bad on 19th January 2018 (purchased 9th September 2016) it gave blue screen error while i was in game, the pc rebooted and then motherboard kept giving Error No. C1 and got stuck in reboot loop, then I filed for RMA at Gskill website and before sending (India to Taiwan) the kit all i DID was test the module in all of the 4 slots of my Motherboard (Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 7 Rev1.0 Bios F22j).

Upon receipt of the kit the RMA department says my RAM is damaged. They are saying it has copper platting on the pins.

Is copper platting on the pins a physical damage? How in the world did that happen? I packed the kit in its original box along with bubble wrap and plastic air bags while sending. Can pulling in and out of RAM slot damage the Pins?? Now they say my RAMs are not under warranty because of this monstrous damage on pins. Then I asked the RMA department if they can fix the ram upon payment, they denied that also by saying they have no Paid service to repair the RAM and are returning my kit. This absolutely unbelievable.

If manufacturer wont fix the RAM then who will? GSKILL is selling their products on Amazon India without even having a authorized service center locally. . I have delt with Cooler Master, Corsair and Casio service depts in India and had no issues in getting replacements.

Can anyone tell me how my pins got copper platting ?

Solution
How do they know it's copper? They do look blackened though. Could you not try and clean the one since getting them back? Maybe use an eraser and after that clean with medical alcohol.
Where did you purchase the RAM? Make sure it is an authorized G.Skill vendor. We have heard of many terrible stories when it comes to third party sellers, and even from some authorized resellers, so you must be very careful. Especially with high RAM prices, people will think of desperate methods to take advantage of others.

Sounds as if they are scamming you. Notice how the G.Skill rep. said nothing about your issue nor did they answer your question about copper plating? You even mentioned going through G.Skill for the RMA. Abd the rep. says make sure it is an authorized G.Skill Vendor. You made no mention of an unauthorized retailer. If that had been the case G.Skill would not have honored the warranty because it wouldn't have been valid so the RMA wouldn't be approved. Yet gskill only talks about authorized and horror stories. Hmmmmmm

RAM does not come off the manufacturing process like that, it would not pass any tests or QC, so the RAM has been tampered with. From an authorized dealer, they get stock direct from G.Skill, where as a third party seller could have used it, OC, done whatever they want with it prior to selling it. I am deducing based on available information and knowledge/experience. I can anticipate responses so my questions are geared towards finding the culprit of the problem in this situation so it can be prevented in the future.

The G.Skill RMA is straight forward, if the RAM is defective and in the original physical condition we offered to you, then we will gladly accept it for exchange. If it is not physically the same, we can not honor it. There is no scam or intention of denying the case for any extra reason that is not mentioned on the G.Skill RMA and warranty agreement.

Folks, please don't abuse gskill support. The issue here is that the memory is likely counterfeit. G.skill is telling you that they don't produce such memory with copper plating. Something smells foul here and not from the direction of G.skill.

For nripen1, from where did you purchase the memory?

If you look here: https://gskill.com/en/product/f4-4266c19d-16gtza

There are some subtle differences in the products.

yes i remember inserting the ram wrongly 2 times, i dont see any difference in the ram parts other than the pins color. maybe it changed because i inserted it improperly. as for where i bought it - Amazon India - Seller - Blue Horse. and to Gskill rep I had sent the tax invoice with its original gskill box so the RAM IS NOT COUNTERFEIT!!! @colgeek. I sent the RAM on 29th Jan , Its Feb 19th Now, Still not received them back!!! USD27 in shipping gone in the gutter. I should rather have spent that in local memory repair shop. Lesson learned if a company does not have a service center locally. DO NOT BUY THEIR FREAKING PRODUCTS!!!!!!

Sorry for your troubles. Hopefully, you'll hear back from them eventually.

I have used GSkill products for MANY years and have never had an issue with them. The international aspect of this purchase/RMA is certainly contributing to your issues.

I would suggest taking this off-line with member gskill support to see if he can assess the status of your RMA.

Sounds fishey you cant install memory the wrong way because of the slot it will only go into the board one way.

This is kind of unrelated, but I see a G.Skill rep responded here, so I need to hijack the thread momentarily.

I am getting memtest errors with my memory when tested together but not individually. I spoke to a G.Skill tech on the phone and he suggests the RAM, although not faulty may not be compatible with one another since they are the same model number but from 2 separate kits instead of 1 kit of 4. He said to RMA the RAM and request it be replaced with a single 32gb kit. Its been almost 48 hours and no response on my RMA status (still waiting for approval to send them in). I know they say I need to wait 72 hours and then submit again if I dont see anything come through. I really want to get this build finished. Any help with that?

Also, I am not sure if there is a price difference (if so I will gladly pay it), but can I request a 32gb kit (2x16gb) instead of a (4x8gb) as my replacement to alleviate any voltage issues with running 4 sticks? Is that a possible or reasonable request?

sure you can install or remove the RAM incorrectly from the slots and damage them.
often they are designed to be inserted at an angle, pushed down into the slot and rocked forward to make the interlock snap into place. When you remove the modules you should undo the interlock, tilt the module 15 degrees forward and remove the module at the proper angle (zero insertion / extraction force)
if the RAM is pulled out or inserted at the wrong angle then the SIMM socket conductor will scape the gold plating off of the pins of the RAM and will expose the base metal. most used ram will have a single dot where the conductor engaged, if it was not inserted/removed correctly it can have a 1 MM gouge on each pin that looks like base metal rather than the gold plate. (worse electrical connection properties at higher clock frequencies)

Good to hear.:D

Don't see why you couldn't try using 3200mhz again.but it's up to you as well as putting the heatspreader back. If rated for 3200mhz should they be able to run that speed since tested at that speed. Guess you used XMP to get there? Might need an overclock on the cpu to make it stable on that speed though.
Maybe and probably it has a second profile on the ram which is less taxing, could try that using XMP. But like i said before also up to you. ;)
