Hi all, first post, sorry if this is laid out wrong.

I have an MSI SLI Plus x299 motherboard, i7-7740x processor in my system.

RAM was reading as 8gb so I got sceptical, re-seated RAM and tried again... Same result.

Noticed the RAM was seated in slots A1 and C1, one stick each side of CPU (according to guide, "4 channel memory) but I think my processor is only 2 Channel Memory, which is 2 on the right of CPU, in slots C1 and D1.

Proceeded to remove "A1" slot RAM, PC boots fine and still shows as 8GB in C1 slot, then tested second stick in the C1 slot and the system beeped non stop and the stick started smoking so immediately disconnected power.

Is this RAM stick being fried caused by the shop installing it in the wrong slot to begin with?

Thanks for reading

Solution
I doubt that because there should be no voltages in the slot they installed it in that would damage the stick. All the slots see the same voltages.
